Can they take my furniture etc in BR

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me!! If you go br can they take items out of my property ie televisions, computers and the kids equipment? I know they can seize a car if its above a certain value but i would hate them to empty my home of its contents.

  • Definitely not. I spoke to the CAB about this and they explained that they would only be interested in anything considered an asset. The lady explained that an "asset" would be items worth more than £500 that could be replaced by cheaper items.

They would never go round your house to check for things they can take. The only thing would be to look at your last year's bank statements, and if you have spent £1000s on electronics or furniture, they might ask for that to be sold to help pay your debts, but they would allow you a small amount to replace what was sold.

With regards to tv's and computers provided you haven't bought them in the last 3-4 months and spent over £700-800 each on them I cannot see a problem. After that the second hand value drops quickly.

I do not think the or would be interested in furniture unless it is something that would cause antique dealers to gasp and lick their lips in delight ;). When I filed for br I listed everything I owned eg sofas, tv, laptop, fridge, microwave, washing machine & bed with their age and estimated value. When interviewed the or did not even comment on it. Try not to worry and as previous posters have said unless they are recent and pricey purchases you should be alright. Good luck.

Household items are not usually taken, and if they do take anything it usually has to be worth at least a £1000 at auction.

i would not put it quite as strongly as some of the others (which covers most of the usual circumstances) as there are always exceptions, for instance if you had 12 TV's even if they were all only worth £400 each they would probably take 10 of them, the guiding principle is that they wont take anything that is needed for a reasonable domestic need and is of reasonable value.

An example i remember was a guy who had a whole garage full of stuff that he had collected over years, nothing was was probably worth more than £100 each but there were several collections and they took the lot as none of it was needed for a reasonable domestic need
