Past relationship troubles

I split with my girlfriend last September, we owned a property together and our method of paying bills was, i'd pay half of my wage into her bank, to contribute to utilities, whilst I would meet the Mortgage payments and social activities etc with what I had left.
When we split we both returned to our respective family homes and decided to put the property up for sale and go our seperate ways. In December I suffered with a serious bout of Pneumonia which developed into Sepsis, thus ensued a 7 week hospital stay, in ICU, with my organs failing. I received a notification from my ex's solicitors at the time notifying me that for some inexplicable reason, my ex had taken the property back off the market. I remedied this by maxxing out my credit card and replacing the house back on the market.
Out of hospital since March, I have now received a letter from the utilities, instructing me that there is a large balance outstanding on our account, and as they were unable to get in touch with my ex, they were now seeking settlement with myself. It turns out she actually wasn't using the money deposited by myself to pay the utilities as we agreed, but frittered it away on god knows what.
Now the question, what can I do? I have bank statements to reflect the payments from my account to hers each month, do i have a leg to stand on?
Thanks for any replies!

In whose name was the mortgage?0 -
In whose name were the utility accounts?
In whose name was the mortgage?
All the bills, mortgage included were in both our names, but the utilities group are unable to contact her, mutual friends haven't seen her since january. I am thinking of just getting a loan to pay it off, just to get them off my back...0 -
If they were in joint names then no, unfortunately you don't have a leg to stand on. The utility companies will chase either/both of you for their money and as your ex has disappeared then that leaves you.

if you can prove that you were giving her regular sums of money for the utilities, you might be able to sue her through the small claims court once you've arranged payment (or perhaps even before) with the utility companies.
that is if you can find her, of course0
