How to make coasters

I have a new coffee table and bedside cabinets and want to make some coasters with some spare funky material I have.
I was planning on sewing together 2 square peices of material with something a bit firmer inbetween, but not sure what to use for the filling. Obviously it doesn't need to be too padded, but enough to protect the table and enable a glass to sit firmly and be washable.
I don't want to have to buy anything and was hoping I had something suitable at home, but not sure what I couldj use. Any ideas?
thanks!:)

Hmmm, old scraps of material layered up perhaps or if you have any old towels could you chop up squares a little smaller than your funky material to put in between. Just an idea washable and not needing to buy anything, not tried it though so no idea.
This has reminded me to make the picture coasters I've been meaning to do for ages!Credit Card: £796 Left/£900 October 2011 :eek:Store Card: £100 October 2011

Would CDs work? When I was a student we used to use free CDs as coasters. You used to be able to pick up CDs for internet access in supermarkets (usually AOL) and we used them. Not sure if you still can get them though...
Quite often papers give them away with either films or music on so you might have some "freebie ones" at home and blank CDs are pretty cheap nowadays anyway (work out about 10p each if bought in bulk)
You could wash them (though not in the machine!) and they are wipeable.
I know they're not square!
so just ignore me if it's no use - I'm not massively practical

Found these that might be doable? http://allsorts.typepad.com/allsorts/2006/11/crisscross_coas.html
The pattern states to use webbing although they could be sewn, and they do not require any padding.

I made some with small ceramic tiles (natural unglazed type) and backed them with felt to stop them scratching (ie I stuck felt on the backs). I sealed the surface of the tiles with pva glue to prevent staining too.
You could try doing this using your original fabric to back the tiles.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
You could try square pieces of cardboard sandwiched between the fabric?Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
