Hi everyone
I'm new and also pretty bad when it comes to PC knowhow so hoping some of you guys can help me out.
Basically all I want to do is transfer all my files (1.9 GB in total) and my itunes unto another newer laptop.
What is the easiest way to do this. My old laptop has a CDRom (I think thats what its called anyway!) so can I just record some of the stuff unto a blank CD and transfer a few files at a time?
Thx

The easiest way will probably be by tranferring to a dvd and then onto ur laptop . I assume it is a brand new lappy therefore it wont be a CD drive and should be a dvd drive. This may take a while to copy the files but is by far the simplest way.
An alternative method would be to buy a 2gb or 1gb memory stick (pretty cheap now £10-20) and tranfer. This method is quicker but requires a mem stick

Does your old laptop have a CD writer or a CD-ROM as only the former will allow you to transfer files.
Whatever your method of transportation, Windows XP has a built in files and transfer wizard which allows you to transfer files and settings across to a new PC.
I am not familiar with iTunes but presume it has some inbuilt mechanism for porting it's info. Otherwise it will be a simple case of moving the MP3's as above and installing a new copy of iTunes.0 -
I don't think my old lappy has a cd writer, altho I'm not too sure - how can I check?
How do I use this Wizard?
Thanks guys0 -
It's written on the front of the CD draw whether it's a writer or not. Clearly it can't be a writer or would have known. Get a usb memory stick as mentioned.0

To check right click my computer>properties>hardware>device manger>DVD/Cd Drives and it will show the make of your drive - google this and it will tell you.:rotfl: :j :T :bdaycake: :xmastree: :bdaycake: :T :j :rotfl:0

it may say cd rom on the drive. if it is a cdrw it will say cd rewriter on it. if the laptop has windows xp it should say in my computer what type of drive it is0 -

It may not say on the drive (as mine doesnt) and it may not be recognized as such in My Comp ( as i have had this prob on my desktop pc)
BTW -> what make and model is your old lappy and what is your new one:rotfl: :j :T :bdaycake: :xmastree: :bdaycake: :T :j :rotfl:0 -
Thanks again everyone. Can't believe how many and quick the replies are!
My Cd thingy attaches unto the laptop. I've just dug it out and it says DVD ROM on the front so presumably this means I can therefore simply buy a blank DVD and transfer the files via it.
Should I still use this wizard though and if so how?
old lappy is a Dell pentuium 111 and I haven't bought the new one yet.

you cannot write to dvd as the drive is only capable of reading dvds. there is a chance it may be a combo (cd rw/ dvd rom)0

That's probably just a DVD reader. If you have USB ports on your old laptop, get a USB stick as advised.Charlie0
