Rightmove average in 2002 from the BBC article Elton linked to: £156,084 or £190,422.48 in today's money (link)
That's an average annual increase of about 4.75% in nominal terms or a little over 2.3% a year if you adjust for inflation. That's not as much as you'd imagine or at least not as much as I'd imagine anyway.
