in Cutting tax
Ok so I have just filled out my 2008/2009 tax return online
(long story I never new I had to do a self assessment as I was employed and moved to France and stuff and blah blah)
Now in that tax year I worked for 3 companies.
Number 1 pay 224 tax 44.80 (just worked for a few weeks to help them out behind the bar whilst working my main job)
Number 2 pay 2203 tax 388.40 (I left this job in June and started another one in July)
Number 3 pay 11382 tax 1068.60 (started in july and it ran past the end of the tax year)
According to the calculator on the self assessment website thing where you fill out your tax returns, I owe around £272 in tax for that year? Why? I can't understand why I owe tax...my wages were processed by payroll at all the companies I worked for and I just don't understand why I am being told I didn't pay enough

Is this pay figure the one on your final pay slip (e.g. past the end of the tax year when you left your job) or is it the one that you got in your April p60 of that tax year?
Also, is the £272 purely tax or is it NI payments too?0 -
are your income figures your gross pay (before deductions or after)
you say the 11,382 'ran past the end of the tax year' ... what wa the income in the tax year?
can you clarify the NI situation .. is that included in the tax figure
who told you told that you needed to fill in a self assessment form?0 -
Why have you only just filled in a Tax Return for that year? Who asked you to?
If you were paid legitimately and received P45s and gave them to subsequent employers, then the underpayment should have been included in your 2009/10 tax code.
How long were you in France for? When did you go? Did you work there too?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

No, I don't have any final pay slips anymore apart from this tax year. I left that job on the 30th April 2009 and went to France for 2 months. As I was running away from problems in the UK I basically left with a suitcase and everything else I owned and all that would have gotten thrown out (very very long story)
When I spoke to HRMC in February they sent me a letter detailing what they had on record for me. I emailed all my employers for each tax year, and in that particular tax year ONLY Number 1 got back to me. The other two have effectively ignored me. So the letter from HRMC that says what I earnt, literally says "pay £11382 tax £1068.60" as well as the companys name and the paye reference.are your income figures your gross pay (before deductions or after)

I hadn't thought of that. However the reply from Number 1 employer was "Your taxable earnings were £229.94 from which £44.80 tax was deducted, so the tax office are correct, (they probably round down earnings). "Why have you only just filled in a Tax Return for that year? Who asked you to?

In 2008 I phoned the local tax office to say I was considering doing some self employed work and when did I have to let them know (it was just going to be audio transcribing from home). The lady said as soon as possible do you want me to register you now. I said I'd rather not if I hadn't made my mind up, she said no harm in doing it you can cancel it (Bearing in mind I was a young naive 19 year old so believe anything anyone says).
So she registered me over the phone, I then changed my mind not long after and phoned back tobe told please confirm it in writing. Which I did. I had no reply after that. Like I said, young and ignorant assumed that was ok. Then basically since then I have moved a lot etc and I have been employed and obviously have been taxed paye etc etc. I recieved a letter in November last year saying you owe us fines and you must do your tax return, which I didn't exactly ignore, but had just found out I was pregnant and was stressed so put it aside. Then in February recieved another one so thats when I phoned up completely confused. She said I could appeal the fines but still had to fill the tax returns out but I wouln't need to do one this year (which appears to be untrue as I have just filled this years out and sent it off online). I have moved over 9 times in the last two years and can see why I may have missed any self assessment packs because by my calculations I've moved around the time they might have been sent out. For instance I move again this July, but last year moved addresses in my halls several times.
This year I appear to be owed a tax refund as my income was below the threshold however paid tax on some weeks so I think thats about £68 and the year before it appears I am owed £192 for the same reason. I just can't work out the year before. I definitely gave my p45 from Number 2 to Number 3.
Now I've been sat here look at bits of paper that I received this year to do with tax coding etc I have 3 letters. Last year ie tax year 2010/2011 when I worked at HMV I was on 647L Wk1 (the last payslip I recieved and was for holiday pay) and I have my p45 for them. Thats ok, 2010/2011 appears to be fine.
Then on 20th January I have a paye coding notice that says
"Your tax code for the year 6 April to 5 April 2012 is 1009Y
We believe you are currently between jobs so we have estimated your tax code based on your personal circumstances and any benefits provided by your previous employer"
Then says it won't have any effect unless I resume employment.
"Here is how we worked it out
Your personal allowance £10090
a tax free amount of £10090"
Then I have one for 20th Feb
Your tax code for the year 6 April 2011 to 5 April 2012 is 250T
You need a tax code so EMBASSY EDUCATIONAL SERVICES LTD can work out how much tax to take off the payments they make to you from 6 April 2011. This is weird, when I was 16 I was going to work at a summer camp, I applied, got the job then turned it down. I've never worked for these people and itwas 6 years ago?
Balance of tax allowances £2500
a tax free amount of £2500
Next letter dated same day
Your tax code for the year 6 April 2011 to 5 April 2012 is 497L
We believe you are currently between jobs etc
Here is how we worked it out
Your personal allowance £7475
other earnings £2500
a tax free amount of £4975
The letter states I am between jobs, correct I am not working as I am pregnant! But on the back says If your HMV income for the year is more than £4976 you will pay tax as follows and then lists the tax bands
So does any of this have anything to do with previous years? I've tried to be as detailed as possible I apologise if it is confusing I'm in uncharted territory.
Basically I am confused as to why I appear to owe tax for 2008/2009 (I can possibly chase number 3 again)
and why my tax codes appear funny
Money money money.

Apparently it isn't my fault, its one of the companies not updating their tax code even when requested by HRMC and so I underpaid taxMoney money money.
