I am having a nasty bout of greasy hair syndrome!!!
Never suffered before and used to have such fly away hair I couldn't wash it more than twice a week.
Now if I don't wash it daily my scalp is so itchy it drives me mad and by the end of the day my hair looks like it has been dipped in a chip pan.
I don;t want to try a wide range of expensive shampoos that may not work. Currently I am using an anti-dandruff shampoo (tesco one) and my regular conditioner. Was wondering if any of you old style wizzes have any tips on something cheap and effective that would help, or the best shampoo to opt for.

I can't comment on shampoo for greasy hair, but I'll share what tips I have about hair care.
Don't over wash your hair. This will only stimulate the scalp to produce more and more oil, so you end up with a really greasy scalp and dry ends. I heard this tip on tv the other day, but they didn't specify a shampoo .
Having suffered from an itchy scalp for 9 months (because I didn't want to go to the expense of Aveda scalp tonic) I eventually gave in and bought it. Within days my scalp was sorted out. It really is unbelievable and worth every penny. I had tried other scalp tonics eg Boots etc, but they didn't work. I use Aveda Shampure and shampure conditioner and now the tonic just when I need it. Sure, it's expensive, but you use so little that it ends up being cheaper in the long run. (When I had short to collar length hair, 1 ltr shampoo lasted me 18 months, washed everyday when v short and every 2 days when a bit longer.) Also, how much is it worth to get rid of your itchy scalp? The tonic is about £13 a bottle, but it lasts for ages. The shampoo really cleans your hair and scalp, but they also do a range specifically for scalp probs. You can get it off QVC - then at least if you don't like it you have the 30 day return - I think you have to phone up as it's not on their website for some legal marketing reason or other. If you live near a city, they tend to sell Aveda in the big dept stores.

PS A white vinegar rinse is meant to work wonders0 -
I have fine hair, and the best cheapo shampoo that suits me is Head and Shoulders. I love the sensitive one (cause i like the smell
) I find washing my hair daily is best for my hair. I have tried leaving it longer but it just hangs there like curtains. Dont whatever you do, use volumising shampoos as they are full of silicones to thicken the hair and they lead to a nasty build up on the hair leaving your hair lank, greasy looking and left long enough, your scalp will itch and the ends will get brittle and split. If the ends are dry, you can rub a teaspoon full of olive oil into your hands and warm it in your hands before wiping your hands down the dry areas. Wash it well though, preferably twice. The olive oil treatment once a week keeps my hair from frizzing.

I mentioned getting a greasy scalp to the hairdresser once. I was advised:
Scratching your head makes the glands produce more oils which leads to greasyness.
Excessive rubbing when washing and drying hair also makes the glands produce more oils. When you wash your hair, gentle massage your scalp rather than scrub at it. To dry it, wrap a towel round your head and press firmly to absorb water, rather than rubbing it with the towel.
Hot water also increases the oil production, so don't have the shower on too hot.
Don't fiddle with your hair as that can also produce oil. Mine is long and I have a terrible habit of twiddling my fingers in it
Since following all that I can get away with washing my hair every 2-3 days. Here I go again on my own....0 -
I too suffered from extremely itchy scalp, was forever asking hubby to check for nits!! Went to the doctors who said nothing wrong just too harsh shampoo. I have very fine hair and had been using shampoo for greasy hair everyday. I changed to shampoo and conditioner for dry hair ,a cheapo one ,and continued to wash it each day and within a few days it had cleared up.
My teenage daughter developed dandruff after using herbal essences which cleared up after switching to shampoo for dry hair, and no noticable difference in cleanliness.0 -
I have psoriosis on my scalp and the best thing is polytar shampoo. You can get it without prescription from boots. It doesn't smell nice but doctors prescribe it so I think it'd be better than a normal anti dandruff shampoo. I can't remember the name of the one I'm using at the moment but it's still a tar based shampoo so it's the same sort of thing.0

I like head and shoulders. There is a link on teh freebies board for a very generous travel size bottle that would let you try it out for free. It lasts me at least a month!
Also, I have tried the white vinegar hair rinse. Apparently it is good for dandruff and making it glossy/shiny. This is because it is an acid and not harsh on your hair, but harsh enough to rid it of product build up. Dilute two tablespoons in a little warm (not hot) water and use as your very last rinse. I was impressed!
Also, on weekends I tend to have a bath before I go out, rather than a shower in the morning. For some reason my hair likes being washed in the bath better. not sure if this is because I tend to spent more time on it though! According to a glossy mag I read recently this is how Liz hurly swears by her hair care! Something to bear in mind.
hth xr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
I had this problem a while ago. Now i don't i use the cheapest shampoo for frequent wash and no conditioner, usually the home brand. Morrisons apple shampoo i'm using at moment and its hard to comb but very shiny then i used that supersoft stuff (BOGOF) next day my hair looked like i hadn't washed it for a week must be silicone in it. Try it, it works for me0

i use lush shampoos, usually the solid one they last for ages. I think they do a solid one called soak and float which might help?
Also I heard you can use beer on your hair, not sure how though, perhaps someone on here can advise (lush do do a beer shampoo too BTW)It's not WHAT you know, it's WHO you know0 -
