Advice Please re old uni debt

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can help me?

Started a post grad course in 2005 but left after a term as it just wasn't for me.

Anyway I agreed to pay back the fees via monthly payments of £20 which was fine until I lost my job in 2008 so I wrote to them and said I would have to reduce the monthly payment- heard nothing for years- have kept paying monthly by standing order- I've moved now but my friend still lives in my old house and says there has been no mail for me.

Anyway, I had an email yesterday from the university solicitors wondering if I was still contactable on my email.

I'm really worried that they will try and get a ccj or something- I have paid over half of it off now.

Should I respond to the email?- there is nothing on my credit file about this I've calcuated the remaining amount to be about £500.

Really worried- I kind of forgot about it to be honest I've paid off all of my credit cards etc- do you think I should increase my payment or wait?

Thanks if you can help me :)

Increase your payments in line with what you can afford. How long would it take to pay the money back if you paid a higher amount you are happy with?

  • I could pay it off within a couple of years.

Do you think I should e-mail back and offer?- I have a feeling they might start chasing me for a higher amount every month. I'm not sure why she has emailed me out of the blue after 4 years.

It comes out standing order every month. I'm really worried that they will take me to court or something.

    Thanks

Personally, I would up the SO and send a 1 off payment if I could, direct to the uni and speak to the finance department. As for the solicitor, in writing only, just ask for information on the current state of the account, just to fill the space. Ideally keep them chasing a moving target, in terms of the amount.
