Tax and Freelancing Advice Please

Hi All,

I’ve been lurking around MSE, and in particular the Up your Income board, for a few months now. So far I’ve earned about £20 from surveys, sold some things on eBay and made a few pence through AdSense, but I’m considering branching out a bit and could do with some advice.

My first problem is tax. I’ve been unemployed since I graduated last summer and the £20 from surveys has been my only income. Since that’s well below the income tax threshold, I didn’t register as self assessed last year (i.e. this January). I’m fairly certain that surveys and freelance work won’t take me over the threshold this financial year either, but I’m desperately hoping that I’ll have a full-time job soon which will. Assuming the hypothetical job is PAYE, at what point would I need to register for self assessed tax? As soon as I know I’m over the threshold, or next January when I would need to file a tax return?

Secondly, what records should I be keeping? At the minute I have a basic spreadsheet with payment source, date and amount. Would that be enough to fill in a tax return?

Thirdly, I’m looking for freelance work to supplement what I’m making from surveys. I’ve looked round some of the sites that get mentioned here regularly (People Per Hour etc.), but lots of the jobs seem to be a few hours a week long term which I’m reluctant to get into. Whilst I’ll keep looking for anything suitable, I’ve also been looking at “micro” freelancing sites with jobs that only take a few minutes. Has anyone ever used these, and if so which are or aren’t reputable? I’ve come across Microworkers, Fiverr, My Easy Task and Cloud Crowd. I got as far as registering with My Easy Task yesterday, but got cold feet when they asked for an address and phone number. Would doing this type of work change the tax situation?

This has turned out to be far longer than I expected, so thanks to anyone who’s read this far and thanks in advance for any advice you can give me :).
