Council Tax Debt on Credit Report?

Should a council tax default show on your credit file?

I went travelling 6 years ago but left owing around £500 on my council tax. Since I've come back (3 years ago) I've made no attempt to hide from them but they haven't contacted me yet and the debt isn't showing on my credit reports. Should council tax show on my report or does it look like they've written it off?

No and No. It's done in the magistrates court so it won't show on your credit reports - this has no bearing on whether they will have written it off or not. I would warn you that failure to pay council tax can lead to imprisonment - they may haul you before the courts for failure to pay so you need to sort something out before they come after you. They can do you for either deliberately failing to pay or just being completely useless so no excuses.

  • Council tax payments don't show on your credit report, it's unlikely they written it off.

A bit of info from experian -

    Do credit reports include information
    about things like employment and
    medical records?

    Credit reference agencies do not
    hold information about your race,
    religion, sexuality, political beliefs,
    employment details, medical history,
    council tax payments or criminal
records. Nor do they hold information
    about savings accounts, other
    investments or insurance policies.

Hope it helps :) Sorry can't post a link as a newbie!

As the others say really - no it won't show up on your credit reports.

They almost certainly will catch up with you at some stage - more than likely when you go on to the electoral role at a new or existing address.

As the others say - save yourself some grief and arrange a plan as £500 over 6 months is nothing in comparison to adding costs from bailiffs and the like.

Be proactive about it is my advice.

Under regulation 34(3) of the Council Tax (Administration and Enforcement) Regulations 1992, a council has six years in which to apply for a liability order; if they have not made such an application in your case, it looks as if they may have left it too late.

But do the decent thing and pay up anyway; your payment could help prevent an old lady freezing to death next winter.
