I am trying to do this myself as our friend is unable to come round, but i have unplugged and replugged hard drive and ram and keep trying to boot sometimes it starts up then conks out again during the set up phase then trys to start again it is very weird, chkdsk went to 75% then back to 50 % now at 54 5 so am waiting and crossing fingers0

thank you thank you to everyone for all your input it is up and running as i type, now to get the stuff off before it goes again which i am sure it probably will ,0

has the chkdsk /r managed to complete its scan?If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.0

yes and it said it found and fixed one or more errors on the volume and then said lots about numbers and total disc space, i have written it down if neede, but i think there must be something else going on as i was trying to find some documents on it and it just cut out again , but it restarted fine, so imagine it is on its way soon but as long as i can get stuff off it i don't mind as it is old and had daily use for a long time(even if the hdd is only 16 months old)0

i would put my money on faulty memory being the problem,on an old machine like that a replacement stick off ebay for a couple of quid and you might get a couple more years out of itIf you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.0

ok thanks i will look at that, funny how something so small can play havoc with everything, is it best to stay the same or get more at the moment there is 2 with 256 on it0

if you have two sticks take one out and see how you get on,if you get problems take that stick out and put the other one in and see if that works any better, your machine will be ok running on one stick,if you get any problems after trying this you can rule out my faulty memory theory,it is then most likely to be either a new hard drive or your out of the window plan.If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.0

I will start to do that tomorrow , but i am just so pleased to have it running again even if it is temporary , so again thank you for all your advice it is much appreciated,0
