Also when you try to boot from cd the cd drive does not even attempt to spin the disc, normally i can hear it when there is one in there, is this another problem ?

If you have a bootable disc it will boot in any pc - try it.
What prog did you use to burn it ?

you can get free burning software here http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/ImgBurn/1128426215/1
click on the blue box that says download now 5,385 kb,remember to untick the add searchbar options while it is installing, when it is up and running choose the option to "write image file to disk" then click please selct file, and choose the recovery file iso which you have downloaded then click the arrow to begin the burn process,i have just burnt one off myself to test it and it worked fine

just leave it,it can stay at a certain percent for a while then zip along quickly,it can take up to an hour to scan the whole disk
