Anyone work for Tesco?

My local Tesco are recruiting for stock control assistants and price integrity assistants, but the hours offered are not enough (14-16 hrs)
But they are on a flexible working contract, saying you've core hours to be worked and you'll be asked for your availability to do extra hrs each week. Does anyone have any experience of this and how many extra hours may be offered? I would want to work 25-30 hpw.

  • My stepson works at a large Tesco and the hours are up & down but it suited him. In the 2 months up to Christmas he had to work virtually every shift (GOOD = Earning Money) but got 2 weeks over Christmas off at their busiest time in return & got to spend the money he earnt in the lead up. In Jan/Feb though his hours were cut to virtually nothing though. He has now been taken on F/T Perm so has nore regular hours to save until he goes travelling. They seem good, he is 19 and loves it there gets bonuses & awards etc from bosses & customers, even got a £5 tip for taking someones trolley back!!!

It's worth applying if you can. Overtime can be plentiful but they do regularly have overtime bans so there will be times when you get none. Price Integrity and stock control are a busy department and night work will probably be available too which pays more. Once working at the store they can volunteer for overtime in any department not just the department they work for so if keen to work and not fussy more hours will soon become available.

Saintjammyswine, tell you son to be careful accepting tips he could get into a lot of trouble.

Glad he covered his back. Can't be too careful with things like that at Tesco they have eyes and cameras everywhere, they check pockets from time to time and you are in trouble if you carry cash etc.

Why not apply and when asked your availability just say you can do these hours on these day or say your very flexible and will do whatever hours as you need the dosh

I agree chances are if you are keen on extra hours and you let them know they may come your way. any job ive worked in ive ended up getting more hours. i would go for it if i were you.
  • I work 13.50 hours at my local Tesco store and I often do a lot of the overtime in my department. It is good when everyone is on holiday as I have a lot of wages at the end of the month but when they do overtime bans or there are no holidays to cover, I do suffer a bit.

You could always get trained in other departments (such as checkouts) and get extra cash that way.

It depends on what your team leader/manager will allow you to do.

    Just to add:

When you work for Tesco you can put the hours you are available to work overtime online for managers to see and they will contact you if any becomes available. You can also choose to be available for overtime at other local stores so plenty of opportunity. As they only recruit externally after they have tried to filled vacant posts with current staff you will soon find a permanent position with more hours if that is what you want and prove to be worth keeping.

I think your store manager would have something to say if your team leader stopped you working overtime in other departments as they actively encourage staff to be multitask and to help out in other departments when needed. For instance in our store from time to time they ask if anyone with a drving licence would like to be tested to be able to drive the .com vans.

i remember reading the bit in bold in the grocer, its a good idea actually
  • I was recently asked to go to another store to support them on their hot deli department. I've only been there two and a half years in my current store :D.

You will find that some fellow staff members will go to the ends of the earth with you to get your task completed whilst others are very firm in their job role, for example, I don't want to do anything else apart from slice cheese :)
