definition of the poverty line?

Is there a clear cut simple definition anywhere of exactly what amount of income puts you below the poverty line..?

  • I think it is less than 60% of average income. I do know that they work out these things using the McClements scale so do a search on that and you should find something.

    Just come from the National Statistics Online - the Median gross annual wage for men in full time employment (2006) is £25,800...

    That's £9,800 more than me then

    that can't be right. My sole income is £900 a month from pensions and I have to pay over £100 income tax on it. Surely even this money grubbing, thieving government do not take income tax from a below the poverty line income?
  • My husband's sole income is £779 pcm (c. £9500 pa gross)and he pays nearly £80 pcm tax on it.

    You start paying tax at about £5grand.

    That's true. There are two ways of obtaining an "average" namely the mean and the median. They can give vastly different results so it depends on who is doing the calculations and what their motives are.
