Tiscali - trouble

Hi all

In June of this year I signed up with tiscali for my phone calls on a non contract basis - i could cancel when i liked.

three months later when i was still being charged by bt i found out ( i had forgotten) that i was in a 12 month contract. I then phoned tiscali and informed them of this and asked them to cancel my contract, I paid what I owed and thought no more about it.

then in October i got another bill after finding it impossible to get through I sent them a letter stating that i had cancelled my account and that they should not be charging me.

i once again received a bill in November but unable to get through sent the letter again.

yesterday i got a default notice saying that unless i paid they would transfer my debt to a dca. I phoned up and after being on hold they advised that they had no record of me cancelling my account.

My query is this though, when they tried to change my account with bt, bt informed them that i was in a 12 month contract and could not change accounts. I feel tiscali should have informed me of this and they have taken my cash ilegally.

Has anyone ever come across a similar situation

if practice your best bet is to pay the bill under protest to protect your credit record and then take them to the small claims court to get your money back.

I had a terrible time with Tiscali a couple of years ago. The only way I could stop them illegally debiting my credit card was to cancel it - at great inconvenience. Their customer service was terrible. In the end I sorted it out by writing a personal letter to the chief of customer service at the head office in London. Telephoning them was hopeless, and I was unable to find an alternative to their 0870 number (I usually can do this through saynoto0870). They eventually sent me a derisory £15 in compensation.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • anyone else come across these sh***
  • I had real problems with Tiscali a few years ago. I was using them as my internet provider but wasn't happy so wanted to change providers. I had done my 12 month contract with them so contacted them to cancel my contract. They said ok and I thought great! However I spent the next 6 months trying to get Tiscali off my telephone line. I couldn't sign up to my new provider until Tiscali was off my line. Yet everytime I called Tiscali they said they had done their bit and BT were at fault. Contacted BT and they said Tiscali hadn't sent the "paperwork" to them, without which they couldn't help. I felt I was hitting my head against a brickwall and getting nowhere fast! In the end I contacted OFCOM and explained the problem to them. They sorted it out and got Tiscali off my line. A few months later i had a bill from Tiscali and when I rang them to ask what it was they said it was the tying up ends of my contract. I paid it just to get them off my back and out of my life forever! My advice is DO NOT TOUCH TISCALI WITH A BARGEPOLE!"
  • When I cancelled my contract with Tiscili I was told my direct debit would be cancelled after the last payment was collected as they work in arreas, but they carried on and collected for another 3 months before iI realised, and I believe its about 60p a min to speak to them on the phone, robbery! Good luck to you though hope you get sorted maybe trading standards will be able to advise you?
