I've read about the AV700 and i remember loads of reviews slagging the screen res.
My brother has a AV500 and it is top quality. It was 300 quid and only 30gb.
I've stuck in an order for this anyway. It looks good and will blow my ipod away.

I have the older 420 model.. 2 yrs ago, its a solid piece of kit... that said like a lot of tech stuff I don't use it as much as I would have hoped

Does not come with charger  (you have to charge via USB) or the PVR station (if you want to use component output for maximum resolution on TV)which is another £55-£70.

Hi! One warning to everyone is that I believe you need to buy a separate kit (costs about £40) before you can record anything. This is a bit of a con as with previous models the kit would be supplied with the unit. So be warned.

I think Archos are being clever here by making it sound so cheap.
  • ive got the av700 (80g) and it is great....not seen the model in question here but if its just and updated version then u seem to be well in! mine came with docking station and it was a goodsend recording stuff to watch when i wanted where i wanted

    Agree with jaymee.
I am not impressed with the Archos 504. The £206 is actually misleading. Most of the features advertised are optional add ons and are very expensive. For eg camera, TV recording, playing certain video file formats...etc. By the time you have bought them all you'd have burnt a massive hole in the pocket. The Cowon A2 has no such hidden costs though more expensive at £280.

Just went through the loop evaluating these for the kids, as they wanted a Personal DVD player for crimbo and I could not see the point..

I settled on the Grundig version for £129.99 including docking station, speaker etc.. there are some mixed reviews on it, but for this money I have taken the plunge..

Can not report on how it performs, as it is currently being hidden under the bed.

The next closest came the Archos, but that would have been an extra £100..

Right I got this in currys yesterday -

They have the Archos for £229 and the docking station for £79.99 (£50 on amazon) but if you buy both together you can get £20 discount on the docking station (£49.99)

I've played with it and it seems solid and a good piece of kit but Archos is out to make money on accessories and plugins (to watch certain movie formats and podcasts)

The plugins cost euro19.99 each - there are 2.

Although I nearly bought the plugins abit of software scans all you movie files and tells you which will work without the plugins. Virtualdub can then convert the files to play without the plugins - a pain for some movies but ok if you don't have many.

As for accessories - yes it charges via USB or the docking station (PVR kit) and you need that for recording off the TV or playing movies on the TV. In my opinion you def have to get the docking station to use it fully.
