Broken toe

I dropped a tin on one of my toes a couple of days ago, it was pretty painful and my toe went black straight away. I am 100% percent certain it is broke but have been told that like with ribs, there is nothing that a hospital can do.Should I go and get it checked out or not bother?

Oh gosh I'm not sure, but it sounds really painful! Hope it's better soon x0

From experience, all a&e will do is strap the toe up to the one next to it. If you do not have normal sensation in it or if it feels cold compared to the rest, then go get it checked out. Hope this helps.

When I broke a toe I was given tubigrip and was advised to wear supportive shoes. Hope the pain eases soon, I do sympathise.0

Hello pixie76
I doubt you can be certain without an x-ray or an examination by a health professional.

For safe diagnosis and treatment, you should see your GP or go to the hospital A&E.
I hope you feel better soon.

I hurt my middle toe last year, I actually couldn't even walk on my foot haha. Went to the Dr and she said theres nothing you can do, just have to wait it out lol. I was hopping for about 8 weeks IIRC lol

same here - back in Sept for me!!
avoid open shoes
bandaging it helps to give it support
I still went into work and just hobbled everywhere in lots of pain but ended up taking 3 days off when they (understandably) decided I was a fire risk during the school's fire drill!0 -
i broke my big toe once and ended up in plaster. I remember them telling me at the time that the big toe is the only one they would take that course of action with as you use it for balance. This was a long time ago so things might have changed but I would have thought it very unlikely that you would come away with anything more than painkillers if you went to A&E. Keep an eye on it and see how it goes over the next few days. Still needs to be X rayed to ensure that the break isn't compromising the blood flow in anyway. If it is broken you may also need a sick note for work, especially if your job involves being on your feet all day - a broken bone is a broken bone and will still take about six weeks to heal.0

I managed to break the same toe twice last year (don't ask!
) the first time I left it and just hobbled about, the second time it snapped at a right angle and I couldn't walk so ended up in a&e, where they gave me a local and pushed it back together then strapped it up with tape. He told me if I ever did it again to tape it to the ajoining toe for support while it heals! If I had done that I would have saved a Saturday in a&e! They do heal it just takes time!
Good luck0 -
Boyfriend broke his toes last year (little toe and one next to it) and the hospital could do nothing, then he broke his big toe 2 weeks ago (also on a tin falling out of the cupboard - damn those pesky tins lol!) and again they didnt do anything. I honestly thought that as it was his big toe, they would need to plaster his foot, but apparently as it was a 'clean' break, all that will help is the time to heal.
I'd still go to the hospital though, (or maybe a minor injuries/walk in clinic if you have one near you) to be on the safe side, as i broke my middle finger a few years ago, and i thought all they would do was strap them together, but i'd broken it in such a weird place that the ligament was effected too, and i had to wear a plastic thingy on it for 8 weeks, and then have physiotherapy as i couldnt move it! At one point they thought they would have to operate too! So always best to get these things looked at.0
