If your contract does not say 20 days plus all bank holidays then yes they can

If it says 20 days plus 8 bank holidays or 28 days total then they are meeting their legal requirements
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

As above. But in addition, even if your contract says 20 (or more) annual leave days plus all bank holidays they can still make you work.

There is no legal right to not work on any Bank Holiday. Only to have a day's paid leave - but the employer can tell you when to take it.

    HTH :)

surely if your contract says 20 days plus all the bank holidays then thats what you get, if your contract says you have the bank holiday off then they cant make you work the bank holiday.

It's a national holiday only in name - it is not legally a BH. Most places will give the day off or time off in leiu, but it is not neccesary for them to do so - so unfortunatley if they want you to work, you have to work :(
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I agree that it depends how your contract is worded. If it stipulates that you are entitled to the actual bank holiday dates, then yes. If it says you are entitled to 28 days paid leave, I'd say no.

If it says you are entitled to paid leave for 20 AL days and 8 bank holidays then maybe not - that would probably be open to interpretation. :)
