I think that's the issue here... this wasn't just an error in the paperwork... there never actually was an offer.

...then your complaint is with your solicitor....but how did completion take place if the required funds (from the mortgage) were not available??

Our solicitor only need the mortgage offer before 1pm to wire the funds before 3pm and we could move in at 5pm

This suggests your solicitor already had your mortgage advance which means there must have already been a mortgage offer?

If they didn't have the money already then completion was never going to happen on the expected day and your solicitor should have warned you of this.

I am getting a mortgage from the Woolwich and when I got the formal written offer, three weeks after the AIP, I then had to sign the acceptance of the offer which came to me from my solicitor. All this before handing in my notice on my rental and before booking a removal company.

If you had actually received your written offer and signed to say you are accepting then you may be one of the very unlucky few who's mortgage offer has been selected for audit, which does happen and can hold things up considerably. And, if it's found that the offer made does not comply with lending criteria, it can be withdrawn.
