Aluminium cans - prices

Hi there
We visited our local recycling centre (one on the http://www.alupro.org.uk/) with 18kg of pure aluminium cans.
When we came to 'get the money' they offered 10p per kilo. That seems unbelievably low.
Alupro suggest that around 40p per kilo is the average. Hence we were given a quarter of the average value.
To rub salt into the wound they actually gave us 18p (they multiplied wrongly - it should have been £1-80) but as we a few types of metal we didnt notice this mistake until after we had left.
This means that this particular operator is offering more for mixed scrap than it is for aluminium cans!!
Has anyone else had experience of such poor prices?
Its a shame as we quite enjoyed collecting them - but for £1-80 for 18kilos (or 18p!!) apart from a warm feeling picking them up its not worth doing from a monetary angle.
Anyone else had similar experiences??

i used to get 40 pence a kilo a few years back. i believe the going rate is nearer 70 pence a kilo now.
were the cans dirty? maybe possible the guy weighing the coins was less than honest?
i would keep up the good work though, you're doing something that benefits the area where you livethe next time you go the recycling place and you get a low price just query the amounts.

Hi there - no the cans were perfect.
I queried the amount with www.alupro.org.uk who seem to be the organisation who publicise reycling of aluminium cans and have this particular operator on their website. They checked themselves and confirmed it was a very low payment.
As you say we're still benefiting the local area but also the local scrap merchants more!!
We'll probably carry on but with far less vigour than previously!!0 -
darkpool is right: the market price for used aluminum cans is a lot higher than you received. Last month saw an increase from £800 / tonne to £870 (£0.87 per kilo). See:
