Tips for People Per Hour

Does anyone have any good tips regarding bidding on People Per Hour?

I have been a member for a long time now and have bid on a fair bit of work but have never been awarded anything and just wondered if anyone out there who has, has any tips?

I know a lot of you will think, "Must be down to your portfolio etc" but I don't bid outside of my capabilities, I will only bid on jobs if I know I can do an effective, decent job

Cheers

Im in a similar situation as you.
I've only been a member for a few months, so perhaps understandably, people are reluctant to hire newbies.

I have bid on a few jobs and not had any luck, but I have had great contact with those that do advertise. I clearly state in my applications what I can/can't do going by their description.

Infact, I've just had a message off one saying sorry but they have taken someone else on.
At least they let me know!

I would say do what I do, and just keep trying. Something has to come up eventually.
  • Yeah I keep thinking that, are you just a free member or paying member?

It's a shame they limit your amoutn of bids per month if you're not paying.

Good that they emailed you though, I've not had such luck with prospective clients!

I am a free member. I ran out of bids last month and saw a job I was very eager to apply for so I purchased more bids.
I didn't get the job, but I felt I just had to try as I would never have known either way.

What sort of jobs are you trying to get, as I'm concentrating mainly on data entry and virtual assistance.

    Keep trying.
  • I'm looking at mainly design jobs (logo work mostly) but now I have started to just look at anything, I once did some football writing for a website during last years world cup covering England (unfortunately) so I have started to look at writing articles also.

There was a recent blog on the site about a young freelancer which got my attention and forced me into start using the site again.

I took a look at this site (and some others) I'm not interested any mroe as it appears you have to wrok for £1 an hour or less to get a chance of doing any work. Basically I think we get out priced by foreign workers who can afford to work for much less.
    Bank Loans: [STRIKE]£25000[/STRIKE] £0- Barclay Card 14%: [STRIKE]£2500[/STRIKE] £0- Student Loan: [STRIKE]£12,500[/STRIKE] £0
    Current total [STRIKE]£40,000[/STRIKE] £0:j (100% PAID OFF)

Yes I do agree with you. I have seen on a LOT of jobs that I would normally go for that there are people POSTING their rediculously low rates on the clarification board.

It does make it difficult, there should just be a seperate site I think for UK/British workers and another site for other areas in the world IMO.

It certainly makes it difficult if you are trying to get some credible work under your belt.

I'm on a couple of these freelance sites (peopleperhour / odesk / elance) 90% of the stuff on there is not worth bothering with as the rates offered are so low.

The expectations of employers on these sites are unreal, I've seen IT jobs where they ask for Microsoft qualifcations and furthur down say their rate is $2 an hour.

Companies in Europe and America are using these sites to get around minimum wage laws
  • I just think sites like these need to be able to flush out all the stupidly low rated jobs and just hone on certain areas really.

I see People Per Hour advertised everywhere now and it's very misleading. I would hate to think of it being someones sole income earner atm.

The pay rates are ridiculous although work is work.

    Keep trying.
  • I registered with PPH a while back, but have just started using it.
I've been bidding on admin / virtual assistant work, and have bid on 6 jobs.

I won a bid last week for a virtual PA, which includes "warm-calling" businesses after they have received an initial call, and an information brochure, and database management, booking appointments etc.

The client stated between £7 and £12 per hour, so I placed my bid at £9.50. Not too low as to rip myself off, and not to high as to rip the client off.

I was in several clients "watchlists", and have found that if you place your bid at a sensible rate, (mine are always slap bang in the middle of the clients budget range.

I find stating what you can do and how you will do it, in what timescale, tends to help too. Especially if you explain the experience you have too.
