coffee machine-leave lid on,coffee drains through to it.

I'm finding it difficult to visualise this particular model. Is it one which uses filter-papers and the glass jug has lid which presses up against a valve to release the liquid?
Perhaps posting the manufacturer and the model name/number might help0 -

well,thats another thing-it has no names/numbers on it!!
very much like the model you describe,but the jug is metal and plastic and the lid seems solid.
think i will try it with just a bit of water and stand it on some towels to be on safe side.
