I would be very interested to know if in other parts of the country my rosey outlook does not fit what others are seeing, is it really that bad out there?[/QUOTE]

I completely agree. I went to the Eden Project a few months ago, out of the holiday season and it was absolutely rammed. People queing up 15 deep at each till. The shops and cafes were heaving.

The restaurants near me are full when I pass them.

People seem to still be buying expensive phones and gadgets.

My sister still got a very large loan to get a car on finance. I have NO idea how.

Where I do see cutbacks though, isn't necessarily in people's pockets but in government services. Cut backs are showing in elderly care and in hospitals. Not less staff necessarily, but people just saying no, you can't have that service anymore.

The plan was to move up north to save money and then move back down south in about two years so yes we'd definitely move back if the job prospects don't get any better. But there's no way I'd move without both of us having jobs lined up down there.

We've inherited too much furniture to move back into a bedsit and there's no way we could afford anywhere bigger without good permanent jobs. It's a shame because the north west is where I'm from and I was really excited about moving back for a bit.

Have you given it a timescale? I mean, if after say 5 years it's still dead end would you sell/store the furniture and relocate back down?

I guess you would have to start applying for London jobs at the same time and then hope you both get offers at the same time too.....then you move. Sounds difficult.

You don't say what field you are in but could you retrain to jobs that are available in the area? Or is there very little of anything?

It's a shame it didn't work out for now...but you never know what tomo may bring ?:) Hope it works out long term for you both.
