Another thread on here made me think about posting this freebie, Secunia PSI (personal software inspector) runs in real-time (low on resources) and keeps track of all your major software such as Adobe Flash, Java and Microsoft products (there are many more), when it detects that an update is available for any of your installed software of this type the program will alert you and provides a button to click to download the update, it is fairly simple to use and is a great weapon to have in your security arsenal (its not a malware scanner so it won't conflict with your normal anti-virus and spyware protection) as out of date programs frequently have security holes that can be exploited by viruses, trojans and other nasties, with this software that is one worry out of the way. MSE free antivirus web page should include this excellent free piece of software for home users as it patches dangerous vunerabilities.

Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader are two products hardly ever kept up-to-date on peoples computers and are used to infect the computers recently through:

opening a trojan PDF document (Adobe Reader) via email / web page.

or

visiting a website page using a trojan flash (Adobe Flash), recent cases of Malvertising is where they actually pay advertising companies to display their fake trojan adverts to infect computers by them being displayed on popular websites.

Used to like FileHippos updater program but far better is the Secunia PSI (Personal Software Inspector) used to help stop the antivirus software from having to try and detect the virus in the first place by blocking the windows/doors in your outdated software!

I agree. I have this programme on my pc and it is good to know when a programme is no longer up to date and so not secure. Also to know that having updated such it is then secure.

I did not include it with free anti-virus software for the simple fact that Secunia does not fit into this category. It is a software updater and, whilst keeping software up to date can help to plug holes that viruses and other nasties can sneak through, it is not in itself anti-virus or anti-malware software.

I also didn't want to include it in the technical section as few members use that in comparison to the freebies section.
