Hi
I'm a 35 year old male with 13 years NCB, live in a nice low crime area trying to insure my BMW 120d. I had an accident last January due to black ice. no-one else was involved or injured. I bought my BM in april and got it insured fully comp, ncb protected for just under 600.
my renewal came through at 865 even though nothing has changed and I've effectively got another years no claims under my belt. I thought they were just upping the premium assuming I'd not shop around.
unfortunately, having tried moneysupermarket.com, gocompare, tesco, directline etc etc. I can't find a quote for less than 800.
any idea why the premium is so high? any ideas to get it down?
any help gratefully received
Matt

Insurance has increased. I think there's information on this site somewhere. Have you searched for it?0

Yes, I've read a few articles saying insurance has gone up but everyone I've spoken to who has renewed recently has either gone down or up by a nominal amount. Nobody I can find has gone up by this much when nothing has changed.
I'm 35 with 13 years NCB trying to insure a diesel car that's not exactly a ferrari. I'm not 17.0 -
Did you claim through your insurance for repairs due to black ice accident? If so it'll be classed as a fault claim against you cos your insurers were unable to claim back the money from any other third party. Unfortunately if thats the case it'll stay on your file for at least 3-5 years depending who your with.0

It's risk based. There isnt much appetite for risk. So, higher risk people or areas have seen their premiums increase significantly. Lower risk people/areas have seen little or no movement in their premiums.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. What the OP is confused by is the fact that the accident was last January and he insured his car in April for £600 (with the accident already having occured and been factored in to this price).
Now when he has received his renewal (wth no change of information, still only the one same accident) the price has jumped to £865.
I am in a similar boat in that I had an accident in April 2009 declared on my 2010 renewal with a price of £569. My renewal quote was £913 with no changes. The cheapest alternative I managed to find was £729 but I was lucky as I got that quote on 11th March and by the time my insurance was due on the 4th April all the comparison sites were quoting me in excess of £900. Fortunately the early quote was still valid.0 -
madmish00, you're exactly right. I thought last years price had factored in my accident.
if I take the accident off the quote, the prices only drop by about £40. For some insurers, it even goes up!
I can get 546 with esure but they won't protect my NCB. It's tempting but if I then lose all my NCB, I'd be up the creek.0 -
It's the same for everyone. I am the best and safest driver on the road in the uk at present and have been for many many years, but swiftcover still wanted me to pay £217 up from £141 last year. (rise of 54%)
By doing the searches a company called Masterquote.co.uk offered it to me for £155 which is only a 10% rise from what I payed last year.
As a 30-40% rise seems to be the norm for most drivers this year then I will consider 10% as 'good'.0 -
I had a similar situation with mine - my insurers put the premium from £700 for 2 cars (multicar) to nearly £1400.
I tried the various comparison sites and didn't really get anywhere, so I tried doing a few by going direct.
LV have insured both cars for just over £300 each with protected no claims so it might be worth trying a few insurers direct.0 -
Check whether you would in fact lose all your NCB.
When I had my accident I had 5 years NCB which was not protected but I only lost 2 years of my no claims. I think a lot of insurers work on the basis of deducting 2 years per claim. Seeing as you have 13 years I doubt a reduction in NCB to 11 years would make much difference as it tends to be the first 5 that have the biggest impact on price. Worth having a look.
The other thing is that protected NCB doesn't stop the price going up dramatically as they calculate the premium first based on risk and factor in any claims at this stage then reduce this by what ever percentage discount they give for your NCB. So it would still go up in any event.0 -
Yes, I realised that after I claimed last year. quote goes up but the discount is still 70% or whatever. it's a good idea to check if I'll lose all my NCB.
I have tried a few directly but they are about the same as the comparison websites give or take 20 quid.
It's not so much the % rise, which is bad, but more that it's the highest price I'll have ever paid for insurance! despite getting older and more NCB under the belt, the prices are still going up. What's even more laughable is that my dad get's his insurance for chuff all in a higher crime area on a bigger engined car and he's been banned for drink driving twice!! I have a completely clean license.0
