Cutting Council Tax Or Stitching Up The Neighbours?

Hi any advice would be appreciated
I have checked the bands of my neighbours who are all in band C however I am in band D.
Checking the valuation guide from 1991 via the valuation that took place for me in early 2004 it would seem I should be in band C also.
When the valuation was done there was a single storey extension on my property so they may have put it in a higher band because of that but since then out of the 10 identical houses in the road another 4 have also built extensions as big or bigger.
My question is do I have a case for getting my property rebanded lower or will I just end up stiching up my neighbours and their houses rebanded up?

Have you checked the VOA website to check if those neighbours properties have a flag against them showing that a review of band is pending.

AFAIK the band cannot be increased until a significant transaction takes place against the property - such as it's sale.
So, if the current occupier makes improvements / extends the property, then the band may be increased when a new owner purchases it.
Since your property already had an extension at the time of the valuation, it is likely that this just puts it into the higher band, but if it was borderline, then a request for rebanding may have a chance.
Your request will not directly impact on your current neighbours. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Any property that has been altered will only have its band reviewed on sale or transfer of ownership. Your extension was taken in to account as it existed at the valuation time but theirs will not be taken in to account until the sale or transfer.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
