    thats nice ......

It was driving wagons on night trunks for a parcel company. Would you want to employ someone who does drugs to drive a 44 tonne wagon with £100,000's of parcels on?

It depends on the nature of the job really.

Many years ago, I used to work at WD & HO Wills and as we left the factory each night a random search was carried out on random employees, many were caught trying to steal cigarettes and yes,
houses were searched as a matter of course. But if you want the job and you have no intention of breaking company rules then I cant see a problem.

As for the mail - personal mail shouldnt be sent to the company anyway, so make sure that none is.

And congratulations on the new job:j:j

Where Mrs P used to work, she had to open all mail, however, any envelopes marked as 'private and confidential' was respected and she left them unopened.

Her employers did not make an issue of it - but she believed that a missive is marked P&C for a reason.

Not all that unusual in retail jobs, when i worked at HMV we basically flashed our bags, emptied our pockets and that was it - but there had been incidences of theft throughout the chain so obviously a wise thing. If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about - i know we had 1 member of staff who decided to have himself a few CD's one time who was busted by staff search policy and 2-3 work placement types too.
Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.

but is this a "matter of course"?

What happens if, having agreed to it in T&C, a member of staff then refuses to allow a house search - or other residents of the house refuse to have their possessions searched when they were not a party to the contract?

Sorry, my mistake, after checking with DH it is actually the police that carry out the house search if needed after the employer search the person and vehicle, not the employer themselves. And only if caught stealing, not just as a random search.

Where i used to work everyone was scanned as they left, just like Airport Security, you even had to take your footwear of, also the amount of Covert and Overt Security that was used really suprised me initially, but finding out the bizzare methods people used to steal stuff was even more suprising!!!

Blame the thieves for the strict security clauses in your contract, Businesses are just trying to protect themselves.
