well according to my director, cash can't be paid into Alliance and Leicester at their desks (for a business account anyway)... am I right in thinking that since it is part of Santander, he could pay it in with cash via the old Abbey branches?

Are you sure? Call up A&L and ask them but surely you can pay in over the Post Office counter?

Why not use it as petty cash and contra it off in the accounts when you next do a reimbursement on the petty cash account?

You learn something new every day - I never realised that there are business accounts you cant pay cash into!!

If the Santander branch has an automated paying in machine, you can use that with an A&L Business Account card, otherwise use the Post Office.

The A&L accounts were designed to have cash paid in via PO counters, not via A&L branches.

Post it as a receipt into petty cash. Instead of calling up bank account 1200 to receive it into as you would with a cheque, call up 1230 (should be petty cash but double check) and receipt into that instead. Problem (which really it isn't) solved.
