Offered new job-what to do about giving notice ?

The job has been offered to me via an agency, do I wait to get the offer in writing before handing in my notice ?
Are there any other safeguards anyone can suggest before I go and see my boss ?
Many thanks in advance

I always wait for something in writing before handing notice in. Doesn't really give you any extra protection but makes me feel more secure!! Well done on the new job though, hope its an upward step.0

thanks for that, they seem reputable agents. Another issue is that the boss is away on holiday for another week, don't really want to shove an envelope on his desk with my notice and him open it when he returns !0

WAIT, absolutely. Get the formal offer, salary, T&C etc first.0

Whilst a verbal offer is binding, your problem will be that the offer is coming from the recruitment agent and not the company. Wait until you have it in writing and then resign. As for your boss being away, he must have a deputy, give it to them.
Good luck in the new role.:jI am an Employment Law Paralegal and an experienced Human Resources Manager and offer my guidance as simply that ... guidance :j0 -
Its a must you wait for something in writing, whether your boss is away or not doesnt matter, give it to 1 of his underlings, i handed 2 of my notices to personnel and it worked its way through the system0

I concur with the above. Wait until you have seen, read and signed the full contract and then resign (this can be via email also if your boss is away - does he have a blackberry?)Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0
