Help the dyes not sticking to our eggs.

My little girl really wants to paint some eggs. So we drew a picture on a couple of the hard boiled eggs with a wax crayon and rolled the egg in food colouring. However, the food colouring is not sticking and my daughter is very disappointed. Please can you offer me some advice and make one 6 year old very happy.
