discretionary company sick pay scheme

I'd say it could go either way, depending on any number of factors - the personalities involved, what kind of day they're having, the 'real' reason for them not paying you sick pay, etc etc.
It's possible that it could negatively impact you (in that you get labelled some kind of moaner or trouble-maker), but equally they could admire you for standing up for yourself and review their decision not to pay you. No way of knowing till you've given it a shot really, so you need to weigh up how bad the worse case scenario would be, and whether the risk of that is greater or lesser than the possible benefit of the best case scenario!
And no, I'm not a 'HR Professional' - I'm just a poor sod of a manager who has to work with some of these daft policies and procedures that are quite often written by people who have few, if any, direct line management responsibilities so have no idea of the operational hoo-ha they can cause!0 -
This situation was a 'first' for me too. Where I work now it's our company directors who make the decision, unprompted they decided to pay me their discretionary full company sick pay for 8 weeks.
Probably their decision was helped along by the fact that I fell down some stairs at work and shattered my wrist! Still, I appreciate it - only been there 3 1/2 months and it wasn't a health and safety issue, I just fell.0
