Amazon.com / Fee's.

Options
Hi all i looked about the forum and didn't know where to put my query so i decided i would put it here.

My father ordered an item from Amazon.com and here is the item invoice.

Item(s) Subtotal: GBP 26.00 Shipping & Handling: GBP 20.30
Total Before Tax: GBP 46.30 Estimated Tax To Be Collected: GBP 0.00
Grand Total: GBP 46.30
As you can see he paid for the Expedited Shipping option as we thought that it would avoid all custom taxe's as it say's in the invoice.

So my dad has been patiently waiting for his item and he got a letter today from Parcel Farce saying that they want £8.30 for Import VAT and 13.50 for Clearance Fee (zero rated for VAT purpose's) = £21.80

So all in all shipping will have cost £42.10 for a £26.00 item.

I don't think this is right ,the problem we are facing is it's a 3rd party seller.

I have spoken to Amazon and they basically said i need to take it up with the seller but when i asked him he said the VAT should have been included in the shipping fee's.

Can anyone shine any light on where i can go if the seller does not co-operate? And if they is correct?

Cheer's.

Where does it say you won't pay VAT. I see it says Estimated Tax to be Collected £0.00 but that just means Amazon aren't collecting the tax from you, that doesn't mean you won't have to pay tax when it reaches the UK. Especially as the item is over the £18 threshold for not having to pay VAT.
  • Maybe's it's just going to be lesson learned for him.

The item he paid £20.30 delivery for is no more than 1 pound in weight and will more than likely be in a jiffy bag, obviously he though all cost's would have been accounted for in that price.

Even so he may have to pay £8.30 for Import VAT but why he has to pay £13.50 for Parcel Force holding the item at ransom is unfair.

That £13.50 is Parcel Force's fee for paying duty and/or VAT to HMRC on your behalf.

    At ransom?
    Yes I suppose it is.
They probably do that to ensure they get paid the money that they have paid out on your behalf and that is rightly owed to them.
    Sounds reasonable to me.

Maybe's that's fair enough but paying £42 quid for a £26 item is mental... Like i said i guess it's lesson learned for him i told him this may happen but i expected maybe's 10 quid more or sof or VAT or whatever.

And from what i haev read on the internet the £13.50 charge is just handling fee's and admin cost's the £8.30 is the VAT they probably paid.

He has no choice but to pay it or end up wasting 40 odd quid and getting nothing.

    The question is...

Could he have bought the thing cheaper in the UK?

Things from abroad sometimes do seem cheaper until you add in the extras.

    Never a truer word spoken.

Unfortunately, when it comes to health, people can be very vunerable and often do things that seem totally idiotic in normal circumstances (Diet Pills, Teeth Whitening, Cosmetic Surgery, etc)

The other thing to be aware of is - are medicines from abroad actually legal or licensed in the UK?

PS: I would be very VERY wary of buying anything even remotely medical off eBay

Import duties are the sole responsibility of the importer - which will be the OP's father in this particular case.
