Are the Halifax slow in responding to queries?

We were due to exchange contracts on a new build last Weds but our solicitor has had to check out a query with our lender re the road not having been adopted by the Council and no section 38 being in place yet.
They sent a fax last Thu and were told they took 48 hrs to respond to queries of this nature usually. Upon our solicitor chasing for a response on Tuesday this week the Halifax "have lost the fax" but managed to mysteriously find it whilst on the phone and our sol was told it would be another 48 hours before they had a response.
Still no word ....does anyone know whether it would be worth us speaking to them ourselves - would this be pointless as i presume it would be a different dept that we would speak with to who our Solicitor would be able to contact?
We got our offer from the bank pretty quickly and they seemed to be efficient up to now...has anyone had anything similar happen to them?
Thanks
sorry if i have rambled but i am very stressed out

This isnt normal
Solicitor referral teams are normally quite good as the queries tend to be of an urgent nature. Might be worth ringing the number on the front of the offer letter to see if you can put any pressure on them.0 -
Once it's been offered and the solicitor is involved I believe all communication is with the mythical "completions" department which the great unwashed, customer and adviser alike, is prohibited from contacting. IIRC they even have a different phone number to call.I am a mortgage broker. You should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
