Yes you are right, I know the endowment didn't clear the mortgage, over payments and lump payments did help, but it did come close to its payout plan. It was started many, many years ago, so performance was better than one started at a later date.
The problem my husband has is that the mortgage has actually been paid off, not how it has been paid off. He can't believe the loan can be nearly cleared, and he had almost convinced me that it could not be true. The over payments are shown on the back of the statement! They do tally!
Not sure we want to keep the mortgage running, have another smallish endowment which is badly underachieving and will give us cash boost in about seven years, rather like the idea of debt free! Rather save up than get a loan, just very old fashioned, comes from being in our mid fifties but with teenage kids, if we can't afford it we don't get it!
