Council Tax Debt

I lived in a flat for 6 months until March 2005. I then left and did a spot of travelling around the world for a couple of years. I've been back in the country for around 4 years now but I've realised that I didn't pay any council tax whilst at my flat.

Right now I live where I work so I haven't had to register with a council. However, I'm looking to get married in 5 months time so I'm saving up as much as possible but I'm also looking to get a loan. Because I'm not on an electoral role getting a loan with a decent APR looks unlikely. If I apply to be on the elecoral role will the council try and enforce the unpaid coucil tax even though its been over 6 years since I left the address?

I've read that back in 2009 a lot of councils wrote off a lot of unpaid coucil tax, would this include mine?

I don't mind paying the outstanding debt, but if they can still enforce it I would like to leave it until after my wedding before I start paying them back.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that council tax debts are special and do not fall into the statute barred category after six years of no contact. Someone with more knowledge on this board will hopefully confirm/deny this for you.

If worst comes to the worst and you have to pay the council tax debt straight away, perhaps you can apply for a 0% credit card and use that to pay the council tax debt. You can then pay the 0% credit card off after your wedding.
Don't relax! It's only your tension that's holding you together.

That's a good idea to get a credit card to cover it but I'm not sure if I'd qualify, I only have a fair credit rating because I've never had any credit cards or loans. It's worth a try though.

What's all this about local coucils writing council tax debts off then? It was back in 2009.

Also, if the debt hasn't been written off does this mean if I do decide to apply to go on the electoral register then it'll flag my outstanding debt up?
  • Well if it is in your name how will they know you are the person who never paid, unless you give them a prev address which they do not ask for? unless you tell them it is you cant see a problem
