What has gone wrong with supermarket bananas ?

Is it just me or do bananas now only have a shelf life of around 2 days before they go off ?
It's tough to even find any decent looking ones in the supermarket but within a couple of days they're already beginning to go off.
I've also noticed that when they do start to turn black they go black from the inside out instead of from the skin.

I've stopped buying bananas in the supermarket too, except for Aldi where they always seem to taste ok and don't seem like they've been forced to ripen..
Otherwise they're just like you say and taste awful.0 -

I only see green bananas in supermarkets that need to be left for 5 days before they're ready to eat......0

The problem with many supermarket bananas is that they are transported in ambient/chilled temperature vehicles, then displayed in or around chilled areas which will turn the skins grey. When bananas are transported or stored in receiving areas after export, the temperatures are strictly controlled and are stored in warm areas.
Once bananas are chilled, they will turn grey/black and don't look very nice.0 -
I usually buy the bags of Tesco market value bananas, but the last two lots smelled so foul that my kids wouldn't eat them. I now have a bowl of about 6 black bananas to make a couple of cakes from when I get a moment.0

We buy all our fruit from the greengrocer now. It's cheaper, lasts longer and tastes better.0
