Police Medical cost

Hi , wonder if anyone can help.
My daughter is applying for a Police special constable role.
she has passed her fitness test and now needs a medical and eye test.
She has contacted our Doctors practice who wants £77 for the exam .
she only works part time at the moment and as special constable work is voluntary this seems a little steep.

Any advice greatly welcome

Chris

Unless your local force pay for it, I can't see how else you will get it paid. £77 is "cheap" for a medical from one's local surgery. We all know it is a rip off but they are usually closer or over £100. If it is something she really wants to do, I think she is going to have to just stump up.

Maybe see if other family members can help? They say charity begins at home, after all. :)
  • Is £77 about right then ? , I would have thought it wouldnt cost more than about £25,
thats me brought into the 21st century then.

What it should and does cost are sadly very very different. It's money for old rope and some surgeries I know of won't accept anything other than cash. So we know that doesn't go through the books then!

I thought the Hobby Bobbies didn't have to go through all that medical stuff? The chap down the road from me (some years back) used to hobble around with a walking stick lol

As a HGV driver, my medical is £100 now and I bet there's not as much stuff done in it.

When I applied for the Specials my medical was carried out at the local training centre for free, I'm very shocked to hear you're been told you have to pay.

I was interested in doing similar thing volunteering as a special, but the police force take the !!!! and this is another example. In the end, most of the special work is spent Saturday and Friday nights watching the drunks....

Your giving up your own time to volunteer, and they won't even pay for a medical!

If she's interested in volunteering, has she considered being a leader for a scout/guide group? Doesn't cost a penny and most camps are free. Hard work looking after a bunch of youngsters, but got to do some amazing things over the years, including flying an aircraft, caneoing down the thames, gliding, lots of sporting activities, zorbing ect :) Training is free and your able to do it when you want- Not 20 weekends as for the special training! :o

Regarding training, you go straight into your role as an assistant leader and slow build yourself up, running a game to organising an evening. During the first two years they would hope that you would attend 3 weekends aways recieveing training and meeting other new leaders. They never force anyone to do training, but if you wish to be in the role for a while its work it. They also have one day first aid training which is the only part of training I think is definitly worth doing.
After completing the 3 weeks, first aid and few other things you recieve a warrant. Then your allowed to run meetings as the warrented leader.

That took around a year and in the last 2 years I've recieve my nights away permit (I can take youngesters away for camps) and in the summer be completing a climbing course so I can take youngsters climbing.

Feel free to pm if you have any questions
