Sky high interest charges...

A friend is trying to pay off a credit agreement with a popular catalogue company. The total of her order was £600.

She paid off £300 which left £300 to be paid.

Unknown to me she suffered ill health and was hospitalized for several months. She came back to a pile of letters, some offering a reduced payment, some offering payment plan options, one saying her debt had been passed on...

Her debt has been passed to Lowell Finance... the debt is now £700...

She owes £300 from the remaining balance and now £400 worth of interest... that is like £100 a month.

She showed her medical forms, GP letters, sickness certificates etc. to Lowell Finance but they refuse to reason and are adament that she pays the full whack of £400 interest on top of her £300 payment.

Is there anything she can do?? They refuse to listen and the interest has been slapped on.

I am no expert, but that sounds unfair. Look in the debt free wanabe forum for oft guidelines of debt management companies hassle, someone who can post links could do me a favour.

I would be tempted to tell them if after reading this you think the traetment is unfair and complain to the OFT if you get no where. They are assuming you know nothing.
