It's Black Wednesday

According the Labour and Ed Balls.

Likening today to Black Monday in 1987 when stock markets around the world crashed, wiping billions of pounds of wealth....Ed Balls decides that today, the start of the new the new tax year, shall be called Black Wednesday.

He's also decided to suggest that the coalition are actively targetting women, due to child benefit reforms.

He warned: "Today will be a Black Wednesday for millions of families across Britain. All this pain, all in one go, aimed at families with children, is not just deeply unfair, it will hamper our economy too.

Hmmmm. This is all getting a little over the top.

I thought things were changing and that Ed had found something new. But no, it's back to "the cuts are too fast and too deep".

Black Wednesday? Targetting women? Has he lost it?

I'm in a family with children and I'll be about £9 better off in my net wage, unfortunately, that'll be going straight to the pumps.

As for black Wednesday, it is dark colour wash day for us, maybe that's what he means?

I don't know if you heard but there was an election last May and Labour lost. You don't need to worry too much about the two Ed's for a while.

Just done a quick calc and I lose about £27 a month i.e. 90p a day. Not a big deal really.

It's a pity that the pugilistic Ed Balls can't apply his brain to conjuring up some positive policy for his party for his troops to rally round.
They got us into this mess, you'd think they'd have some idea of how they'd have got us out of it.
Is that the reason why they lost the election last May?

It's a lovely sunny day and a 4 pack of Crunchies was on offer for a quid in Morrison's. I'm not feeling too black so far. Anyway, isn't calling it Black Wednesday terribly racist?

I think 'Wednesday of Colour' is the PC term for it.

Black Wednesday for me is more to do with last night's result than the tax changes.

I don't like it when they talk about benefits and wages in the same context. In my mind someone losing some of their wage which they earned is more significant then someone getting less benefits, which they didn't.

exactly - why are things like this a surprise?

the lot that are in power now were exactly the same when they were the opposition before the least election.

Like many others I will be several hundred quid worse off this tax year. This is obviously annoying.

...But rationally I know we can't keep borrowing and spending at the level we have. i also know that during the good times I did well (with the added benefit that I managed to avoid splashing all my cash up the wall) so I guess I can afford to pay more back to get the country on an even keel.

For labour to get so dramatic about it smacks of desperation and stinks of rank hypocrisy TBH - the debt and defict we have run up happened on their watch.

I bet they were hoping it was a dark, wet and windy day to provide a suitable gloomy backdrop for their 'message' - Bad luck chaps, it's glorious!
