Could someone be so kind as to review my letter of resignation?

Hi, even though I'm temping with a recruitment agency I thought I should hand in my notice personaly (which I will do verbally prior to handing in written notice.

Could someone spare me a minute and review it.

Many thanks in advance.

Dear xxxxx

Letter of Resignation

As required by my Contract of temporary employment via xxxx Recruitment, it is with deep regret that I hereby give you one week’s notice of my intention to leave my position of xxxxxxxxxx. This was not an easy decision to make and one which took a considerable amount of thought.

Please be assured that I will do all I can to assist in the smooth transfer of my responsibilities before leaving.

I have most certainly enjoyed my time with the xxxxxx and I am absolutely certain the experience will serve me well in my future endeavours.

I would like to take the opportunity in wishing you and everyone at the xxxxxxx the very best in the future and I would like to thank you for having me as part of your team.

Yours sincerely

Basically fine, felt a little 'oily' [I was looking for the word 'humbly' ... ], so toned it down a bit

    Tend to agree with DVardy.

Must admit my thoughts on the "original" were more along the lines of "With manners like that - do you need a job? (as in its a much nicer idea to live off the acres of land surrounding the Old Homestead...).

But, assuming you havent come from a "beautiful manners and a manor" background - then I'd go with writing it the way DVardy said.

The only additional thing I would put after the end of your first sentence is - "My final working day will be xx/xx/xx"

Way too flowery. I would have gone for something far more clinical.

I would use the shortest version from the 'I resign' website unless you really were spectacularly happy there. Still since you are leaving there is no reason not to bow out with good grace.

if with a temp agency, I would have thought giving verbal notice to line manager should be enough, with same to the temp agency- maybe a quick email to confirm if needs be?

I thought DVardy's suggestions were spot on and it's a nice, polite letter. Though I agree with Sujman, the date of your last working date should be included.
  • I agree with adding your last day. Don't worry that's it's "oily" "Flowery" this reflects the type of person you are and you never know you may want to work there again. Only other point are you entitled to any annual leave> If so perhaps you should state whether this will be taken in your last week or you wish to be paid for it. Otherwise I would be please to receive a letter as polite as this. I think it's a pity some think that we only need to state facts. I agree if there is a dispute but not in this instance .

Haven't posted on this board before and came across this by accident. Having worked in recruitment and managed a number of teams in my time I'd have to say that I found your draft letter very good. I'm sure the staff at the agency will really value the time you took and will remember you in the future - not least because I'm assuming you dealt with them with similar courtesy during your time working for the agency. You never know when these people will be in a position to do you a good turn in the future so it doesn't hurt to leave them with a good impression, even if you don't have to. What goes around comes around.

I'm rather astounded at the suggestion that you need to be 'to the manor born' to display courtesy and good manners!
