    A couple of questions...

How many years approx before you make a profit?

How much roof space does 16 of those Sharp panels need?

    Many thanks

    Automan.

By profit I assume you mean you have back the money you spent on the panels + lost interest on that money.

It is impossible to say with any accuracy because you have to estimate inflation rates and interest rates - plus factor in any repairs/replacements etc.

Up until a few months ago I would have thought 12 years would be a reasonable estimate.(investing the money saved to earn interest) With prices of panels reducing 10 years is probably nearer the mark.

Assuming of course that the Government don't 'mess about' with the subsidies!!!

Unless you treat the investment as an index linked annuity where you write off the up front payment and then regard the FITs as pension income.

    Hi

If you're referring to 16 of the Sharp 245W panels to form a 3.92kWp array, you'll need somewhere around 35sqm of unshaded South(ish) roof space after allowing for free space all around the array .... you can find the specifications of the panels on the Sharp web site.

Totally agree - I have suggested before that the best financial model is an annuity.

However as the term 'profit' was included in the question, I don't think an annuity was being considered.

    Hi Sharon1985

I'm not saying that your posts are spam, but they certainly seem to be a little suspicious .....

Your profile has made 4 posts, each one mentions the installer by name. The first posts were on Tuesday 26/4 stating that you had just ordered a system and the latest says that the system two day installation was completed yesterday, Tuesday 03/05 ....... ??. Considering that there should be a cooling off period between order and fitting, there being 2 public holidays and a weekend between order and completion & 2 days to fit (starting on a bank holiday ?) looks to be very suspicious at the least ...... does the installer both not conform to the REAL code and never have days off, and did the scaffolding go up last Thursday, two days after the order ? ......

    Hi SpudSpud

People are posting their kWp(Panel DC) not the kW(AC) from their inverters. Regarding the "most you are allowed to attch to the grid network is 3.6 kw system."[sic] etc, I suggest you do a little more research around what G83/1 is based on (16A/phase etc), along with system losses, what the actual UK supply voltage is, what individual DNOs allow to be registered without pre-notification from the installer, followed by the DNO pre-notification process for larger systems ......

    Research not required!

i'm a specialised electrical engineer who oversees connection of wind turbines, hydro and solar PV onto the grid (11kv upwards).
I've worked in Holland Germany, Spain and now the UK doing this.

you can find the link to this by typing in G83/1 into google and down load the PDF regaring this.

    I'll give an example

a solar PV system produces 3.6KW Dc from the array a new installation will produce up to an average of + 3% tollerance (an extra 108w of power in total for the total array) an inverter such as a sunny boy has a efficiency of 97% so the gain in the array will be lost in the inverter and a further 2.8% will be lost in the cable, connectors, isolators etc. if the job is sized correctly.
a 15 m cable run using a twin and earth should be sized for 6mm for the voltage INCREASE on the grid not the voltage drop (as per BS7671) as it's a SSEG generator embeded onto the localised grid network; a spark would normally size this on a 2.5-4mm at a push.

Hence why you should keep your system at 3,6 Kw 3.7 at a push any more and you could face having your system shut off if it's been registered in the first place that is check with your DNO (not electricity supplier) to see if they have registed your system.

as for the feed in tarrif at 4Kw that is a level that was set by the goverment quango who never bothered to consult the power companys properly so there is a 340w no mans land in the feed in tarrif

    Check my facts
    Mass confusion

PS can anyone tell me how to size a DC isolator properly for a PV solar array .......Bet not!

This forum is for everyone to share their experience of solar pv and installers they use
If I wish to complement them for their efforts I have a right to do so.
Real Does state seven working days cooling off period but I it was my personal request to install the system ASAP due to my husband coming home from a long stay in hospital. I and my husband started on this venue to install solar power together and our wish was for it to be completed by the time he returned home. The installers pointed out they had to leave a seven working day cooling off but if I don’t mind if the days are not ‘’working’’ days I really don’t see the problem.
And the scaffold was put up on first day of install.
I can also say I looked into installers for weeks on end had 9 quotes and every time on every issue
From products used, references obtained, accreditations the installers I choose come out on top
Any questions I asked them where back up with evidence.

The sign up to install was quick (my demand) but my research took weeks

I’m upset at by your comments and think you should keep your judgmental comments to yourself.

    Rant over!!!!!!!!!
