Hi all,
Thanks for your replies.
With regards to the type of student loans I took out. As far as I remember I need to earn the national average wage (which I think is over 23k) before I have to pay them back. Also if I dont pay them back before I'm 55 then they get written off by the govenrment.
As Imenda asked for my top 5 tips, I would suggest the following:
1) Work out what is owed to all your creditiors (I didnt follow this piece of advice to the letter but I knew what was owed and who wanted it). Try not to aquire any further unwanted debt (stop the rot so to speak).
2) Budget - Really important. Work out whats coming and what essential needs paying first(mortgage, food, tax, water, fuel etc) then look at whats left for your debts.
3) Use the snowball calculator to work out which debt to pay off quicker. I would suggest that you tackle any debt that is about to goto court first. This is one headache you do not need.
4) Make your payments on time and do not miss payments. Even if they are just token payments. As soon as you miss one, your creditors can say you've broken the agreement and start to make unreasonable financial demands on you. If you stick to your agreements then they cant take you to court. Remember to stand your ground - if you cant afford it dont be bullied into overstretching yourself. STAY FOCUSED.
5) Live Life - you only get one shot at it. Although you may be in debt you are still a human being with wants and needs. Try to treat yourself once in a DFW while (just try not to add to the existing debt).
I would also say - remember to laugh. At the end of the day you will achieve your goals if you stay focused but there is no need to forget who you are in the process.
Cheers,
