repossession balance

My flat was repossessed over a year ago, and after the bank got its money back the balance was lodged somewhere like a court. I've mislaid the paperwork as my partner was dying of cancer at the time. Its about 22k that me and my ex husband are owed but I don't know where to find it, who to ask or how to get it.
