does anyone know how this works .
I thought if a pensioner had more that £16,000 they couldnt get rate relief
,apart from the 20% discount for over 70s .
However according to the booklet that arrived with the rates bill pensioners are allowed £50,000 .does anyone know any details on this .

Do you mean earnings or savings?

All I know is that my Gran pays next to no rates and has some savings, but she is 97 tomorrow, so is probably getting every age relief going

Pensioners can qualify for some rate relief with savings of up to 50k, it's all taken into consideration with the income they have available say weekly/monthly

Rate relief and housing benefit are shown as two separate benefits however it's one form to complete. Rate relief is usually a lesser entitlement.
  • Hey OP

There's a nifty wee calculator called the Access to Benefits calculator which can be accessed online at :

    http://www.a2b.org.uk/

It can help identify some benefits and support which may not have been claimed yet. It's confidential and free to use, so might be worth a look.

    All the best,
