According to the Citizens Information website:

    Renewing a passport

Whether you want to apply for a new passport for the first time or renew an old/current passport, the application form and the application procedure is the same. The Department of Foreign Affairs provides a Passport Reminder Service which sends you a reminder by email 3 months before your passport is due to expire. You must register for this service.

If you apply for a new passport before your current one has expired, your new passport will run from when you apply.

f you use An Post's Passport Express service, which guarantees that you will get your passport within 10 working days, there will be an additional charge of €8.50 per application. An Post also offers a 'Family Application' option at a special rate of €14.50. (Up to 4 passport applications for a family may be enclosed in one envelope). This fee includes postage to/from the Passport Office. The Passport Express service through UK Post Office branches in Northern Ireland and Great Britain (pdf) costs £6.

Yes, I believe that you will have to get your photos signed again. Not sure if you are in Belfast but Bedford Street Post Office has Irish Passport Forms and you can avail of the express service there. On the form is a list of the professions that can sign passports - from memory.. Priests, Headmasters, SOlicitors, Accountants, Police Officers (both Gardai and PSNI).. I think it may also need to be officially stamped as well.

Just beware that the Post Office checking service does not guarantee your application is correct before it is sent. Check out the requirement yourself about the photos being signed by phoning the Dublin office. Contact information here from NI Direct.

I had mine checked at Bedford Street a couple of years ago in last week of November. We were travelling a few days after Christmas so had left it very late but was assured there was plenty of time. I got worried when I hadn't heard anything back after a few weeks and rang to be told I had provided the wrong marriage certificate - I hadn't understood what they meant by a "civil" certificate. :o Unhelpfully the passport staff in Dublin had sent me a letter rather than ring or e-mail me to tell me this and the letter was delayed in Christmas post. So I had to drive down with a certificate from GRO on the 18th and back again on 22nd December to pick up passport as there was no chance of it getting to me by post.

I was rather :( that Post Office staff didn't pick up that the certificate was wrong in their check but when I asked them they said it was my responsibility to check the certificate was correct. Fine - but then what is the £6 for? It's a lot just for postage. ;)

I got mine done late last year and no problem, came in about 10 working days. Got the wifes done recently and took nearly a month to arrive, had to e mail them telling them I was due to travel soon so may be worth e mailing after a while to let them know you ae travelling soon.. Also be very careful with the photos as they are very very picky, you cant even smile!!! Hope this helps.. I used Brackenvale post office both times.. ;)
