instead of buying tinned chick peas, buy a big packet of dried chick peas then cook them all at once and freeze in portion sizes.
The only problem with this is that you can't recycle the plastic that dried chick peas come in, but you can recycle the tins that they come in.

Buy milk in glass bottles rather than in cardboard or plastic.
I also recycle the plastic 4-pint bottles as our council accept them for recycling.

I agree with you regarding the big bags of dry cat food. Much less waste in packaging and in the food as my cat eats all of it wheras she used to leave some of the moist cat food and we ended up throwing some away. The big bags also work out a lot cheaper than moist food and lasts longer too.
We use Hills as IAMS has a bad reputation for cruelty in its testing.

what plastic items can be recycled ?

my sons school has just started various recycling bins, paper & card ,cans etc

but i am not sure what can / cant be recycled when it comes to plastics ?!

Very much depends on the council - ours will only take plastic bottles and lids, whereas the neighbouring council will take everything except what they call categories 4 & 5 (mixed plastics, eg yogurt pots and packaging).

There's some useful info on this site - had a quick glance through it, and wadda y'know, there's info on there about collecting bottle tops for cash!! (Edit: you have to have about 100 binbags of them, so possibly not much use for individuals, but perhaps would be worth collecting in a school or somewhere for charity? GH Resources in Portsmouth pay £50/tonne)

Also, if people are concerned about bags, you might want to sign up to campaigns to ban them. It's worked fantastically well in Ireland, but the government here are dragging their feet (nothing to do with the fact that a certain peer owns one of the biggest supermarket chains, I'm sure).

Our local council don't recycle much either. We can only stick cans, newspapers and plastic milk bottles in there. However they do have a truck that comes round that has three sections to it and I've seen them sorting it on the pavement so I know it gets done properly.

However this morning I am fuming! It's been over two weeks since we had any rubbish collection and they promised on the leaflet they sent out that for this collection only they would be doing a cardboard collection if the cardboard was flat. I dutifully spent ages last night collapsing every cardboard box only to get up this morning and find all rubbish gone except the cardboard and because it's raining it's all got soaked. So now I have had to bring soggy cardboard back into the house and hope it dries enough so I can load it into the car on Monday and take it down the tip myself.

You are so right bizzylizzy! I've been ruhless recently with compost, glass, paper, plastic and cardboard. I used to put out between 3 and 4 black bags a week, now it's usually 1, sometimes 2! Only trouble is we now have four bins in the kitchen! LOL!

Anyone with an allotment would be pleased to have this and I'm sure they'd collect it.

Hi, I thought I would add this link regarding the recycling of tetrapak's.

    http://www.tetrapakrecycling.co.uk/

It does mean paying the postage to send them back if your area does not recycle them but I think its worth it.
Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!
:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!

Just dropped an email to the tetrapak one, very interesting, I wouldn't mind paying the postage if they will definately be recycled, but will see if there is a fairly local collection place first :)

My bins reduced dramatically in the last week, I have now used all of the excess chemicals I kept (well almost got a glass bottle of zoflora and a few others but that will be recyled) I compost whatever I can now, I can't believe how little I throw away compared to before just because of making the effort to recyle more. Cardboard is stockpiled in the shed for the tip now (we had one bin day when they collected it but that was all) My sister now has a recycling bin for cardboard etc etc in her area, and the 'regular' bin is only emptied fortnightly. I think this is a great idea, I know 3 people in the same area who have started to use washable nappies because they don't want them in the bin for up to a fortnight which is great :) Unfortunately we only have doorstep collection for glass, cans and paper, in addition to the compost bin, so I have to take the rest myself.

With bunnies, they may be too old to teach now, but mine was trained to use a 'potty' in his cage, he used to only pee and poop in that area (plastic tray) then the rest was reusable or could be composted.

I've started recycling more packaging where I can too, especially for eBay items, and I have noticed more are doing this aswell, which is great.
One day I might be more organised...........
