Letter about unpaid tax ?dodgy

Options
Hi everyone,

I recieved a letter in the post saying i didn't pay tax on bank account interest in 2007/8 and that I needed to contact HMRC to give them a load of details about my bank accounts/income etc.

I'm hoping someone on here can reassure me cos there are a few things that seem a bit dodgy about it to me:

1. It is dated 20th Jan (and arrived last friday)
2. The envelope was torn and half open
3. It gives no details of account in question (ie. bank or acct number)
4. It looks like the sort of letter i could make up in 10 mins.

It asks me to contact someone called Amanda Waite at the eastern england compliance office on 01274204505.

I've not rung them yet as I can't find any details of the above person/number on google or the hmrc site. Can anyone tell me if it is legit? Or is this normal for HMRC?:)

This reverse phone number checker says that number is in Bradford.
I've been chasing a "lost" tax file and it seems the responsibility for it was transferred to Bradford.
Now that a file can be accessed on-line I'm not clear what "normal" is any more, too much scope for playing pass the parcel?
Try phoning the number (from a mobile?) and then ordering a taxi or a pizza to see if the number seems genuine.

Do you have a bank account registered for gross interest?
Are you a higher rate tax payer?
Do you have an account with more than 50K in it?

I got a letter from Glasgow asking if I knew anything about my dodgy neighbour - it looked very genuine.

My first question would be - was the interest on your bank accounts taxed in that year?

I think I'd be inclined to ring a HMRC helpline, and ask them if the contact info etc was genuine. The fact that the letter was torn and arrived late wouldn't necessarily mean that it was dodgy - maybe it got damaged in transit by getting stuck in a machine or something, and that is why it was delayed.
