What job for a disabled young adult?

Asking on behalf of my friend.
He is 23 and has no qualifications or experience, and he's been on benefits all his life.
He had to drop out of school for medical reasons so he never managed to complete his GCSE's, then from 17-21 he's been in and out of hospital.
Now he does have a good standard of health and hes been in college for the past 2 years retaking his GCSE's and is now on a graphics design course.
However his mobility is limited because he has a broken hip and thus can't do anything active (registered disabled).
Now hes depeserate to come off benefits, but what employer will realistically take him on?

quite a few to be fair, the fact he has shown self motivation to do his GCSE's is a credit to him and this really is something that he should be pushing as a positive to employers.
As for what job, well I would always advocate doing something involved in what he enjoys, if he has no luck doing this then any job will do and then when he has that job he can concentrate on finding a job in the area he enjoysThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!0 -
Well flipping burgers in McDonalds he'd rather not. He can actually drive a manual car and enjoys doing so, so some sort of delivery driver would be good for him he thinks getting in and out a van all day with heavy parcels will batter his hip.0

Just to add, he actually went to the job centre today to speak with a careers advisor - they advised him he may as well stay on benefits as its cushy, and that he'll lose his benefits if he earns more than £95 a week.
No wonder how country is in a mess.0 -

I love how people who have no experience, no real qualifications, and have been on benefits for god knows how long think it's okay to dismiss a job like that.
Going by what you've said, he'd be lucky to get a job at McDonalds, and i'd advise there, or a similar establishment as the places to start looking for work.
If he has a broken hip, i'd suggest that getting in and out of a car, with packages, isn't the brightest idea.Per Mare Per Terram0 -

I agree, but you cant blame him for trying! Better to have high expectations then not at all.0 -
What about him becoming a bus or taxi driver?0

You have to be realistic though.
No qualifications. Zero work experience. Long term benefits.
And he's scoffing at a job at McDonalds?
That's what is wrong with this country.
Hope he get's his head out of his (you know what), and does well for himself.Per Mare Per Terram0 -

Thats a fair point, butI guess the real point of this thread is "What jobs are available for people with little qualifications". I think at this moment in time he has a 4 B-D's in GCSE equivilants but thats all.0 -

The jobs for people like that are the ones you already mentioned, McDonalds, retail, etc.Per Mare Per Terram0 -
I would have thought fast food service of any kind would not be advisable for anyone with mobility problems likewise delivery/courier driver.
Has he considered office work of any kind? This tends to involve computer use on a regular basis and might give him the mix of moving around (for example copying/filing etc) with sitting to use computer.
TBH it might be worth him finding some voluntary work to see how his hip copes with the stresses and strains of regular work - Do It www.do-it.org.uk allows you to search for specific kinds of voluntary work if you select the advanced search option and he could look at admin and any other roles he thought he might be able to do.0
