|Ceridwen I tried Mr S value muesli and it wasnt v good so tried to at least use it up like porridge in a pan and didnt really work that way either.. unless you are a better whiz than me or have different tastes.. I found it v dry n minging both ways..
Thanks for that - well...I'd better have some juicy fruit to hand to put with it to "take the edge" off any dryness in case.
Don't suppose you tried making up any recipes with it did you? - or was it that bad that the birds got lucky?

....and, on a different topic, those initials above are:
TEOTWAWKI = The End of the World as We Know It
WTSHTF = When the S*** Hits The Fan
Personally....my reaction to TEOTWAWKI literature tends to be an astonished "Why WOULD anyone want to survive that anyway? <puzzled smilie>" - but I guess that may be just me....
WTSHTF = well...theres maybe some chance of having a reasonable Life still....so work out how to deal with things and try and have that reasonable Life...but again that may just be me...
...and me feeling a bit astonished by my mother making comments that someone else should be prepared to just accept a paycut from full-time to 4 days a week and maybe go off shelf-stacking if they wanted to make the money up....errr....I detect a distinct difference of opinion to my own on both those topics then......and thanks heaven I've got to an age where I could and would literally walk out at any such suggestions and head straight onto the phone to my Union. Ah...the blessings side of Getting Older...0 -
Ceridwen, I can't remember, do you have any way of drying food? If so you can add fruit very cheaply to your already cheap museli. I have added dried foraged blackberries and sunflower seed kernals from the pet food shop (I checked, they are baking grade!) to mine.
Also I double checked on that site I referenced yesterday and they do a white salt with nothing added (curently out of stock but fingers crossed)
http://decorativeaggregates.com/rock_salt_and_winter_products/msgrs053/Pure+White+Rock+Salt.html
and a salt for paths etc not mixed with grit or sand
http://decorativeaggregates.com/rock_salt_and_winter_products/msgrs050/Rock+Salt.html
which does seem to be from Cheshire and I'm assuming has no anti caking agent as they emphasise the non addition thing, but haven't phoned to check that absolutely, and I see no reason not to use it for cooking if this can be checked.
I'm quite excited to find this as have always wanted to try out a 'baked in salt' recipe but have been unable to justify the expense of using sea salt.
Thanks for that.
Yep...I do have a dehydrator - and am still experimenting with what I can and cant reasonably dry with it. Note to self - must try blackberries next...

GREYQUEEN
Yep...I know about the minute trace of cyanide in apple pips - but have been told by a local Forager Expert to eat the whole apple pips and all (ie because its such a minute amount). I have also read somewheres that apple blossom is edible - but does have that minute trace as well - but too little to bother about. Like you - I'd rather wait for the apples to come out and eat them instead...
Have just been studying wild flower books on Amazon (you dont need to guess now do you?.....but......) and copied out a recipe from a preview page for a book there about making fritters with beer batter of basil stalks and flowers. Well - I never knew that - and promptly copied the recipe down....0 -

 Doe anyone else feel overwhelmed at times by their lottie and/ or garden?! I was standing in the middle of it all having forty-fits and thinking where the heck do I start, and why-oh-why are weeds so much faster growing than food plants.
YES. I've all but given up this yearThe garden I tend for an OAP was stripped almost completely bare earlier this year, then we had that drought which coincided with the garden owner going in to hospital for 3 weeks, and I didn't have keys to her place...when I finally got access, the weeds, vines and brambles hadn't been told there was a drought because the garden looked no different than before I stripped the garden bare
Then the rains came, and I've not been able to catch up. It looks like a jungle.

My back garden should have been very productive this year, I planned and weeded and set it all out at the right time - to no avail. I have a few courgettes, 3 celery plants, shallots were ok, tomatoes not bad (touch wood as smileyt got a blight warning when we were having a cuppa the other day!) May have 3 broad bean plants, spring onions, garlic chives and 50 kale plants:rotfl: reeks of desperation doesnt it. I am going to use some weed mats I got in the pound shop and gravel over then on the paths if the weather holds out??? Other than that will have to re-think next years plans. Maybe drop a viagra pill in the hedgehogs hidey hole to encourage a huge litter next year thus solving the slug problem. Still the blackberries are looking good on the main road so hopefully my plans to harvest the hidden cycle path with the aforementioned Smileyt may soon be a go-er!
Oh and I have spuds, but my next door neighbours daughter keeps giving her some from her allotment and she passes them on to me so I have spuds upto the armpitsClearing the junk to travel light

Back to work tomorrow after a pleasant week. Was feeling a bit cheesed off this morning, but gave self a talking-to!As BLUEBAG suggested I went down into the city to do a bit of pretend tourist.I was delighted that the city festival was on this weekend-I had forgotten-so it was such a lovely change. There was street theatre, and lots of activities for families as well as continental food and crafts. It was an absolutely gorgeous day as well,so I had a picnic I'd made up.
On way home, nipped into M&S to buy some unmentionables:D and was admiring the flowers. The assistant near me smiled and said that if I wanted any she was just reducing them to 50p.I got 2 huge bunches for £1.One had beautiful roses and the other had a sunflower selection-both in very good condition.I kept the sunflower bouquet as I am night shift this week and have the flowers up into smaller bunches so I can be reminded of the sun:jThe roses I gave to my friend who lives up the street from me and hasn't been very well.We had a chat and a cuppa, then I went home for my CHOCCLARE's lovely chinese chicken.Aaah-much better now!
Hope everyone has a peaceful, pleasant week:DWe are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.Oscar Wilde xxx:A0 -
My daughter and her pals were round at our house the other night before going off to their summer ball. One of the girls brought some champagne, there is half a bottle left but it was left without a top on for about a day and its gone a bit flat so not really good for drinking. I don't want to throw it away but any ideas what can I do with it?
Thanks for any suggestions.0 -
Leftover champagne - I've never had that problem:D Could you make some sort of a posh jelly with it? I'm sure someone much more well informed (about leftover alcohol anyway) will be along soon to help!
I was up at 6am due to the lovely scottish sunshine. had bacon rolls outside on the patio. Hubby went back inside as it was too cold but I'm made of hardy stuff, who cares if I needed a fleece on - at least I can say I had breakfast outside once this summer.
My early start prompted a glut of baking - one lime and coconut loaf (from the bero book), one orange and coconut loaf (an adaptation of the first), one cinnamon and raisin loaf and a blueberry and sour cream loaf (last 2 from the hummingbird cook book). I've donated half of each to my parents as they frequently have visitors on the farm so home baking is always needed.
I managed to get some painting done outside this afternoon which was much needed. I'm glad I live in the middle of nowhere though - my painting shorts were in the wash basket and had been missed so I decided I would just paint in my knickers. Not a pretty site and I'm not the tidiest of painters so now they are paint splattered. Heaven forbid I ever have neighbours who can see me - I would need to learn to behave like a normal person:D
I think I may treat myself to a well earned Gin and Tonic tonight - just noticed the tonic best before date is Feb 2011 so thinking I should use it soon:)0 -
Champagne jelly with strawberrys or raspberries is good or a champagne sorbet is lovely too.0
