Do you add garlic, celery and carrots to the tomatoes? This adds to the flavour and thhickness of the sauce.

I definitely add carrots, loads of them. Garlic if I think about it but not celery. I shall try some with celery as I bought some whoopsied the other day for making soup. Thanks for that. Esther

Just to add to the 'old stuff, new stuff' conversation, we have inherited a lot fo our furniture.

I'm currently sat on my grandparents' (father's side) leather and oak sofa which was bought for them as a wedding present in 1932. Across from me is a matching chair, behind it is the matching coffee table and upstairs as my desk is the oak desk from the set. Next to me is my gradfather's grandfather clock which he inherited and on the coffee table in the middle of the room is the OH's granfather's old Singer sewing machine. The footstool is also part of the set.

We also have inherited some of the pictures on the walls from my parents. In the kitchen I regualrly use spatulas and spoons and peelers which my MIL inherited from her mother in the 60s and has handed on to me. We use the OH's grandad's cutlery and the OH uses a electric meter reader thingy which was made in the 40s and was used by his grandad.

Finally, the wedding rings we wear are my grandparents' (again father's side) and are inscribed with their names (opposites on each ring, her name on the OH's and his name on mine) and the date of their engagement - 5th June 1932.

I love it - it gives me a feeling of comfort and security and the OH feels the same. We value these items above so many other things and if that means we have a living room from the 1930s, so be it - it suits us :D

ceridwen, space clearing does work in a house and sometimes the stale energies need to be moved away. At the very simplest level, ringing a bell will do it as will burning sage. Google space clearing and you`ll see what to do. Also feng shui works and it can simply be a matter of moving a few things and/or colours to make the difference. I have lived in houses that have felt `not me` but it was needs must and you can do a lot through feng shui principles. It is a very interesting topic to study esp things like the poison arrows that can affect your home and how shrubs etc can be protective. I was just thinking about our dd who moved into her new house on an estate, 6 months ago and they are loving it. That house has a bank behind it, covered in shrubs and the house is tucked away behind a protective wall. There are no crossroads or poison arrows and the potential is there for it to be a very happy home

I have a friend who bought a house on a crossroads and now the house is tatty from the outside because her dh had an accident and hasn`t been able to work for many years. They have a daily struggle. Cars keep going towards them to go straight or turn right or left, they have a front garden and just one thin tree on the corner, it`s bad feng shui. I have to stop rambling but feng shui is so interesting

Errrmm....actually I've done my own space clearing on the house - so theres no bad vibes to it. It just doesnt "work" on a practical level for me ....

You have reminded me that it would be as well to "update" on the space clearing front for it...but if a house doesnt "work" it doesnt work and an attached house in the wrong area with small kitchen and teeny garden just won't work for me with the best will in the world - no matter how nice the atmosphere.

Hmmm...now wondering when the next best time is for candle lighting and a bit more "positive thinking". A house in nice enough area/location that would "work" for me/detached/big enough kitchen/do-able size garden at a good price has just come up on the market. I've had my eye on that particular house for some while now - as it would "work" and I quite like the look of it from the outside. Definitely the best "deal" I could get in the price range I am looking at - but that price range is higher than my finances will allow for. Hmmm....:

    -candles = check
    -positive thinking = check
-ready to roll on moving = very nearly so...

<wanders off thinking "Think positive ceridwen....think positive....think POSITIVE...." and then check those premium bonds I hold...:rotfl::rotfl:>

Hmmm....my guess is that its somewhat old-fashioned inside and I know the owner isnt moving to anywhere else (as they've just died) - I've heard of people making stupidly low offers for houses getting accepted sometimes and I could only make an offer that wouldnt just be stupidly low - it would be a "downright insult" in fact....I wonder....(makes mental note to keep an eye on it and see if it hangs around on the market for long enough that the level of offer I could manage would get accepted.....). As the offer level I could manage is so much lower than the asking price - that means that house has to hang on the market for months for them to consider me...and I'm well aware of a couple of other houses (not ones I am interested in....) that have hung around for a year or so and they are still exactly the same price as they were...

    ceridwen,

This is the ASKing price remember. A house is sold for what a buyer is willing to pay for it.

Is anyone going to the Lincolnshire Show on Wednesday 22nd & Thursday 23rd June 2011??

If you are lucky enough to go - please pop into the dog creche and say hello to the lovely girls (and DD2) from Jay Greens Dog Rescue :)

Been back to the allotment tonight - the rain this week has certainly brought things on - dug some more 2nd earlies spuds for tomorrows lunch, picked 5lbs strawberries, nearly 1lb of raspberriess, three courgettes and a large bunch of baby beetroot :j
Monkeyboy - I wear my Auntie Amys wedding ring nowadays - she was married for nearly 60 years so it has great sentimental value. Sadly my own is too tight now arthritis has thicken my fingers

Has anyone on here told you about Twinks Hobnobs yet?

They are sooooo good, but seem to vanish quite quickly :).

....AND what the seller is willing to sell it for :D

If the Executor needs the sale to pay IHT then they may well sell at a vastly reduced price but if the beneficiaries don't need the money immediately then they may well hold out for the full amount or even rent it out until the market improves.

If a seller is inclined to accept a low offer then generally they will want a quick sale, ideally from a cash buyer, or at least a buyer who's house is SSTC.

So glad I've been outdone with the outdated flour. I unearthed a jar of home made blackcurrant jam (at least three years old) while sorting. It's so tart no wonder it was at the back of the cupboard. Decided to add it to my porridge to use it up and add some honey to sweeten it. Guess what - the honey was out of date. Tasted good though :D.

Sell by dates are overrated!!!! :D

Jam should be OK for ages if it hasn't been opened and if it's tart it means it's acid which will preserve it too!

Sell by dates on honey are a legal requirement nowadays but laughable - honey is the one food which doesn't go off ever - honey has been taken from the pyramids and found still to be good :T You can occasionally get fermentation if the water content was too high at the time of bottling (but you'd probably already know about that before now), and it does sometimes crystallise, but you can get rid of that just by warming it gently.

7WW I hope the sun shines on you and your family when you scatter your Dads ashes.

I know what you mean Mardatha about new furniture, most of mine is new apart from a few pieces from family. Except for 2 Victorian candle mirrors I fell in love with in an antique fair, they must have been owned by someone really nasty and they are beginning to get on my nerves. Think its time they went!

I keep spider plants all over the house but just realised there isn't one in my office which really needs it. I have just potted some on for Dd's new house too. We have various crystals for OH which a friend sent when he first got ill and he believes they help him a great deal. I am happy that my Dd (and though he only ever admitted it to me once -my Ds) follows my beliefs in spirits and natural healing and balancing your world.
